FINO OUI MORE:" the teaeral government's Experience '78 grant program and the Durham 1Region YMCA have resur- rected Whitby's summer playground program which was dropped from the town budget earlier this year. The Town of Whitby and the DurhamYMCA each received ,$2,879 from the federal government, and by pooling their resources, will provide activities in three locations -Palmerston, Florence Heard and Meadowcrest Schools - Pre- schoolers will go to Ahl Saints Anglican Church. the new program, called the Green pepper Club, wil be conducted in Whitby, and $8,000 has been provided for another program called the Purpie Pumpkin Post in Pickering. Despite the assistance from grants, parents will have to pay part of the cost of these programs - $10' a month plus 50 cents a day. 1 the money for the Picker- ing project is from Students Serving Youth, an offshoot of the Young Canada Works program.-,1 The programs include courses in French, canoeing and backpacking. At the Heber Down Conser- vation Area the Y is running a French immersion day camp with the aid of an experimental grant of $12,000 from the federal government's Young Canada Works program. .There are also-the regular day camp, sports camp and creative arts camps, held at the Heber Down Area for, several years. In addition to these activities, Experience '78, .a provincial program, has provided $3,800 for canoe and backpacking camps. This year the Y will also be offering its summer tutoring program which has been well attended ini past years. The Y hopes it will not require govermnent grants to finance its programns next year, for it will be relying entirely on activity fees to pay the costs, says Program Director Elizabeth Moore.
