The teamn, originated by Constable John Watson in March of this year, has already had several tryouts at public events, and- lias established Whitby's' 18 Division police station as its training headquarters. At present the team'has 14 members from ail divisions except Brock and Ajax. Constable Watson, the coach of the team, would like to see ail divisions in the region' represented and start a second team., Eight members take part in a pull at one time. ,The police tug of war team had its first public appear- ance May 22 at the Bethany Fair, where iît was pitted against local fire fighters. The team lost the match, but it gained valuable exper- ience. The team's second engage- ment was at the Brooklin Spring Fair June 3 where it was up against the Metro Toronto Police in what turned out to be a very close contest, the Durham team losing out only after a tough struggle.. At the Ajax Home Week June 18, the Durham team made its third appearance and won one out of three contests. Big things are ahead, however for the Durham Regional Police tug of war team. 'The teami will be performing at the County Town Carnival Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. in Iroquois Park, again against the Metro Police. It will be a formidable test, says Constable Watson, for the Metros outweigh the Durhams by 600 or 700 ponsand have more experience. The team will be competing in the Canadian Tug of War Championships Aug. 26 at the Canadian National Exhibition in, the 800 kilo class, and Constable ,Wats n is a member of the champ- ionships' advisory, commit-, tee. Later in the year the teamà expects to go 'to a meet at, Windsor where there will be large money prizes. The Durham'police team has had a hand in creating some of its own equipment. In conjuction with the Sisman shoe company in Aurora the team has designed its own boots with inetal cleats for gripping the dirt tracks where tug of war competitions' are held. In competition the team uses a one and three-quart- ers inch manilla rope 150 feet long. Const.able Watson says the tug of war is a "real crowd getter," and lie is anxious to put his team to work at any public events. Any organization which, would like to have the. Workouts are bard and strenuous, with the team members averaging 22s pushups each session. They also work out with the tower, pulling an 1,M0 pound block of concrete set in a metal druin to the top.
