PAGE 18, WEDNESDAY, JULY 5, 1978, WHITBY FREE, PRESS Lions Club buys equipmentforroquois Swi*m Club The Whitby Iroquois Swim, Club received a helping hand from the Whitby Lions Club recently when the club donated $300 to the swimmers for the purchase of equipment. The presentation was made by Gordon Kerr, chair- man of the Lions Club's Boys and Girls' Education and Sports Committee. The Whitby Lions Club will also donate a trophy for an annual -championship meet between teams in the Ddurham Region: Ajax, Oshawa,, Pickering and Whitby, the clubs that are registered wvith the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association. The first championship meet will be sponsored by the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club, and is tentatively scheduled for the Whitby Winter Carnival Weekend next year. It is anticipated that this will become an annual event in the Durham Regional sports scene. The Swim Club is in its first year of registration with CASA, and already bas a number of "A" class- swiîn- mers, emerging from its ranks of thlrty members. The Club ecpects to increase its membership to- sixty swimmers, ranging in age from seven upwards, when the season gets underway in September. Photo by George Blake Seniors' c'entre is activé in July There is plenty of activity in July at the Whitby Seniors' centre, with bus trips and County Town Carnival events. Anyone who wants to to on a boat cruise to- the Peterborough lift lock is asked to -register at the Seniors' Activity Centry July 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $6 per person, and there is room for 48 people on %he bus to Peterborough. he'bus for the boat cruise leaves the centre at 10 a.m. sharp July 17. Those going are asked to bring their own lunch. Further trips throughout the surnmer include the African Lion Safara at Rockton, Aug. 16, the Canadian .National Exhibition Aug. 28, and a bus tip to the Kitchener Farrners' Market in September. Details will be announced later. July 29 at 7:30 p.m. the seniors will have their County Town Carnival dance at the activity centre. AIl of the games down- stairs in the centre are organized and new members are welcome to sign up for one of their choice of indoor sports. New teams are made up as you join. Ceramics and pottery wilI continue through the summer. Interestec members are encouraged to participate, since there are openings in each class. Weaving and macrame will begin in the fail. The *workshop area is open daily to any member who wishes to use the craft tables for handicraft work. Ladies are invited to learn billiards at the seniors activity centre. Bessie Eliza Harden, a long time resident of Whitby, S died June 24 suddenly at S Fairview Lodge. e Born at Chatham, Kent, e England, she was a duhe e of the late Walter and Annie Peters. A member of the United Church of Canada, Mrs. Harden was predeceased by ber husband, Robert Roland Harden. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. B. Hanna (Betty) of Guelph; Mrs. S. Holroyd (Doreen) of Mount Forest and Mrs. P. Finney (Roberta) of Villa Park, Illinois. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and. five great grandchildren. The funeral was held June 27 at the W.C. Town Funeral Chapel, Rev. John Smith of St. Mark's United Church officiating. Interment fol- lowed in St. John's Cemetery, Port Whitby. Contributions to the Canadian Heart Foundation would be apprecmated. VIOLET ]RICHARDSON Violet Daisy Richardson, a former r«esdnit ofWbltby, di.d at the P.terborough Civic Hospital June 25, in her 84th year. Mrs. Richardson had moved to Peterborough a few years ago, after living in Whitby for many years. Mrs. Richardson, was a member of the Whitby Senior Citizens Club and a life member of the Whitby Historical Society. She is survived by one daughter, Dorothea Treen of Whitby, one son, Stuart Richardson of Peter- borough; 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Mrs. Richardson was pre- deceased by ber husband Daniel Richardson,-,and two sons, Gordon Joseph and Garnet Cecil.
