Nearly one hundred parent volunteers in local school libraries, Public librarians and teachers heard award- winning Canadian author Jean Little reminisce about her childhood and discuss her work as an author for young people. She urged librarians and parents to provide ýquiet times to encourage reading and creative writing for their children. Irma McDonough, editor of "In Review" spoke 'as co-ordinator of Children's Library Services for Ontario. She discussed the impact of Canadian liter- ature on young people and urged teacher - librarians to read Canadian books and to help their students k-now the ple.asures of reading. FÉollowing a lunch at the Genosha Hotel the livrarians heard Brad Cruxton, Social Science Consultant of the Durham Board of Education speak on multiculturalism in the Secondary School. He presented resources on various ethnic groups and discussed Canada's multicultural heritage from the point of view of the school ibrary. Mary Anne Brinckman, editor of the popular child- ren's magazine "O0wl" out- Iined the success of this magazine which publishes 75,000 copies a month and their proposed new mag- azine for 4 -7 year olds which will be available in 1979. -Representatives from varlious publishers attended with displays of new mat- erials for school libraries. The Professional Activity Day was arranged by the Durham School Librarians' Federation under the chair- manship of Marie Wiley of O'Neill Collegiate. Region review quashed D. Regional Council voted 15-13 to reject a motion by Councillor John DeHart of Oshawa that a committee undertake a study to see if review of the region is, necessary. Whitby Mayor Jim Gartshore and Councillor Gerry Emm were absent fromn the meeting. Council- lor Emm had said earlier that he wanted to see a review of the region's finance department., A number of Oshawa councillors voiced their opposition to the review study, but councillors from Uxbridge and Scugog indi- cated support for it. Downtown bylaw passed Whitby's downtown improvement area bylaw has received- council approval, and presently awaits final approval by the Ontario Municipal Board before going into effect. Council passed the third reading 0f the bylaw re- cently, which will assess downtown merchants $10,000 for improvements in 1979 and another $10,000 in 1980. When 0MB approval is ,obta ined, the town will set up a Board of Management for the downtown improvement area which 'will administer the expenditure of funds raised through a- special business tax assessment. Gow of Whitby took place Saturday, June 24, at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, 794 Kingston Road, Toronto, with Rev. Patrick Finnerty off iciating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Deneault, 146 'Elastwood Road, Toronto. The bride- groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gow, 1719 Rossland Road East, Whitby. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a full length gown of Venise lace accented with rhinestones anid seed pearis with a long train. The floor-length veil with Venise lace trim feIl from a baby's breath head piece. she carried a bouquet of red roses and baby's breath. Miss Catherine Jones, Toronto, a cousin of the bride, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Maryann Deneault, sister of the bride, Miss Susan Robichaud and Mrs.,Joanne Arseneauit, ail of Toronto. Flowergirls were Kimberly Deneault, Toronto, sister of the bride, and Amy Gow, of Ott.awa, neice of the groom. Edward Gow, of Ottawa, brother of the groom acted as best man. The ushers were Robert Grow, London, brother of the groom; Bill Deneault and Norman Deneault, Toronto, brothers of the bride. Ring bearers were George Deneault, brother of the bride and Brent Gow, London, nephew of the groom. The reception was held at St. John's Parish Hall, Kingston Road, Toronto. The couple took a honey- moon trip to the northern United States and upon their return will reside at 265 Main Street, Apt. 2311, Toronto. Sig9n company is fin cd on income tax charges Mohawk Signs and Dîsplays Ltd., of Whitby was fined $1,000 in provincial court last week for its third offence of failing to send income tax deductions from employees' salaries to Ottawa. The company pleaded guilty to the offences which occurred in October and November 1977. The firm's lawyer testified that Mohawk Signs had been in financial^ difficulties and had been about to declare bankruptcy at the time. Mohawk Signs had been convicted twice for the same offence in 1975 and was fined $200 a nd $400. Judge Norman Edmondson said a higher fine was needed for repea ted offenses.
