THORNTON SCHOOL Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1978 at 7:30 p.m. The Corridor Ratepayers' Association will sponsor an all-candiate forum for Durham Board of Education and Regional Council. The candidates vying for the two school trustee positions are: - Betty-Jean Blyth, David J. Franklin, David Sims, Jm Speers and John Whiteside. Approximately one-half of your tax dollar is consumed by the board of Education. Did you ever wonder HOW? Region Council hopefuls are: - Bob Attersley, Tom Edwards, Gerry Emm and Roger Smith. WHITBY JAYCEES On Saturday, December 2, the Whitby Jaycees will organize WHITBY a Santa Claus Parade for the citizens ol Whitby and surrounding areas. Whitby is growing, the Jaycees hope this year's parade will be bigger and better than previous years. TURKEY DINNER The Westminster U.C.W. Turkey dinner was completely sold out by Thursday of last week. For those of you who were unable to be accomodated, the U.C.W. apologize for the inconvenience. Church dinners are extremely popular and to be sure of being served tickets must be spoken for in advance. Thé U.C.W. are extremely sorry that people coming without tickets were not able to be served. ST. ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN- CHURCH KIRK BAZAAR This Saturday, November 4, will be St. Andrew's Kirk Bazaar. Mrs. Schwartz, wife of the President of the Whitby Ministerial Association, will officially open the bazaar at 2 o'clock. Many articles will be offered for sale Le. - knitted outfits, aprons, macrame, novelties, wijite elephant, table decorations, home baking etc. your convenience, a chance shopping. COMRA may not patrol The City of Oshawa Marine Rescue Association (COMRA) may stop patrol- ling Whitby waters unless the Whitby Town Council starts paying part of its operation costs. Alderman Alan Dewar of Oshawa made this statement last week as the Oshawa Fire Protection and General Pur- pose Committee, of which he is chairman, decided to ask Whitby . to reconsider a recent motion by its council not to help pay for the rescue boat Oshawa and Newcastle pay for COMRA, which is manned by volunteers. The boat patrols waters adjoin. ing the shores of Newcastle. Oshawa and Whitby. COMRA Commander Bob Henstock reported to Alder- man Dewar's committee that in 1977-78 COMRA answered i distress calls associated with Whitby waters. He also pointed out that the COMRA boat, based in Oshawa harbor, makes regu- lar weekly patrols in the Whitby area. 'It is very.evident that the parties concerned with the decision (not to pay for COMRA's costs) are not completely aware of the Volunteers needed Durham Centre for the Developmentally Handi- capped, located south of the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital, is greatly in need of volunteers for the many programs offered by the staff. Volunteers can be usefuil both in the Children's Unit and the Adult Unit. Five fire calls in two days Whitby fire fighters had a busy two days Friday and Saturday, responding to five calîs. On Friday at 11:32 a.m. fire fighters extinguished a kitchen fire in the home of Ann VanStavern on Durham Road 23 (Whitby-Ajax Town Line), south of -Highway 2. Damage amounted to $500. The fire department reports the cause was a stove burner turned on wrongly. Saturday at 7:06 a.m., fire fighters were called out to 15 Michael Boulevard to rescue a man trapped in a car following an accident. The accident is under investiga- tion. At 8:13 a.m. there was a car fire at Euclid and Dundas Streets, resulting in $600 damage. A fire depart- ment spokesman, said the fire in a car owned by H.J. Platt, 308 Euclid Street, was caused by power steering fluid spread on the manifold. Saturday at 11:12 a.m. a fire caused $5,500 damage to a bedroom in the apartment of Walter Porter at 123 Kent Street, Apt. 4. Mr. Porter was taken to the Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital, suffering from smoke inhal- ation, and was released four hours later. The fire and smoke damage was confined to the bedroom. The fire department reports the cause in under investigation. At 5:30 p.m. another bed- room fire occurred at 413 Byron Street South. Damage was $1,500 and confined to the bed. The owner of the home is Ivor Lawrence. The tire departrnent reports that this fire is also under investi- gation. Mr. Henstock says he has been to Whitby council at least three times asking for financial assistance, and said that if COMRA is expected to go into Whitby waters the town should either pay or get its own boat. MUNICIPAL ELECTION, November 13 Your local government, to be elected on November 13, will make decisions affecting you more directly than any other form of government. Street lighting, sewers, roads (with or without potholes), sidewalks, schooling, library, staff, recrea- tion, garbage pick-up, zoning, transportation and water are but a few of the responsibilities of our Whitby councillors and school trustees. If you are a tenant, and school or municipal taxes increase, your rent will jump accordingly. Regardless of the peoples' input on planning, it is our elected. representatives who have the final say. Staff may have grand and glorious ideas about how your money is to be spent, but it is our councillors who will make the final decision.
