3 governments represented at Athol GreenCo-op opening ,A host of dignitaries turned out for the official opening of Athol Green Co- operative Homnes Saturday. Co-op President Mike Burgess acted as master of ceremonies and thanked the numerous agencies such as the planning department, board of directors and CMHC for their assistance in the project. Mayor Jim Gartshore comniended, to the board of Athol GreenCo-op for bring- ing a new concept of living to Whitby for people who would not be able to afford other living facilities. He ernphasised that the project is bringing people into the downtown part of Whitby, and reported that three quarters of the 48 units are occupied, all by Whitby residents>. Mayor Gartshore said the town will be looking very closely at this type of development to determine if others will be established in Whitby. Councillor Tom Edwards echoed the Mayor's senti- ments, and said if the co-op is kept Up to« its present standard there will be more approved in Whitby. ,' Both MayQr Gartshore and Councillor Edwards thgnkéd Co-op. Burgess stated that the opening ceremony was his last official function as president, and he is stepping down now that the new residents' board is taking over. Senator Andrew Thomp- son, representing Ontario Riding MP Norm Cafik, said he believed in the co-op concept and had been involved many years ago with an Estonian co-op in Toronto. "We are going to watch to see the success of this,"I he said. "The success is in the people working together. Al Canada wil be watching because this is a new dimen- sion in housing." Mike Jacobs of' CMHC donated 'a, flag staff, as, a symbol of.federal participa- tion in the projeet at Greeà, Dunlop- and Athol Streets, and Bruce Woodrow, a, representative of the Co-op Housing Federation 'ôÃ" Toronto presented the flag of international co-operation to Athol Green Co-op members Robin Lyon, and Dorothy Huitema. Tina' Olaf fte Corodva , Co-op in Oshawa presented Mr. Burgess with a desk set in honor of the Athol Green opening. In his remarks, Durham West MPP George Ashe said "lhere the name speaks for itself. A co-operative means people and organizations getting together. " Following the speeches in the courtyard in the centre of the development, the digni- tatries,- each with a pair of scissors, lined up and eut a green ribbon to open the project. This was f ollowed with a reception and tours 0f the co-op for visitors and guests. POPPIES FRQM SCOTLAND John Bell, 315 Palace Street, Whitby (lef t) receives a poppy for Remembrance Day from Alexander Robertson~ of Hamilton, Scotland, who assisted the Royal Canadian Legion in its Poppy Day, campaign, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A member of the Royal British Legion, Mr. Robertson, is spending a two-month holiday in Whitby with his three neices, aqd decided to help out his fellow Legionaires in Canada before his return to Scotland 'uesday. Mr. Robertson served 25 years in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) until 1946.He served ini China, West Africa and India in the Second World War.
