For further informa- Denture therapist's charge disniissed A Whitby denture thera- pist charged with illegally providing dentures to a wel- farerecipient who could not aàfford ýtbe prices carged by dentists, had bis case dis- missed in provincial court in Oshawa last week. Dhian Thapar- was charged by the College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario three years ago under a -law which allows denture thera- pists to make fuil upper and lower dentures on their own, but specifies that partial plates must be made only unçier t.he direct "Supervision of'a dentist. Mr. Thapar said the law is unworkable because dentists will not agree to give super- vision. He said a woman asked him for a partial plate in October 1976, and attempts by him to contact tbree dentists were unsuccessful. Mr. Thapar said the woman told him she could not afford to pay the $640 wanted by a dentist in Toronto; so hie made the partial plates and charged her $225 for them. The woman's complaint to the dental college about the dentist she had been seeing before coming to. Mr. Thapar, led to the discovery of the work Mr. Thapar had done for her. He was charged despite the fact that the woman was completely sat- isfied with his work, he said. Ernie Benton, adminis- trator of the Ontario Asso- ciation of Dental Therapists said a brief will be presented to the Ontario Minister of Health in an effort to,*get the, law cbanged. He said'the law was a stupid arrangement' which forces people to do things that are against the law for the good of the patient. Dr. Kenneth powell, regis- trar of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons, said he expected the dismissal of Mr. Thapar's case will be appealed because it is con- trary to a Supreme Court decision handed down two days earlier.
