A proposed shopping plaza to be located south east of Brooklin at Tlickson Road and north west corner of Columbus Road was termed premature by the Planning Department and Council last week. Councillor Joe Drumm objected to the proposed plan being shelved. He said, "here we have a developer who wishes to talk about commercial development to take place in Whitby and it is to be shelved because of the Brooklin Study. The Com- mercial development would be half as big again as Woolco and it would mean at least 100 jobs for the people of Whitby." The motion put forth by Councillor Drumm to have the proposed Commercial Dèvelopment referred back to the Administrative Com- mittee for further considera- tion was lost. The I.C.I. Developments (Georgetown) Limited soli- citor had made an applica- tion for the amendment of the Official Plan. During the discussion in the Administra- tive Committee meeting it had been moved by Council- lor Barry Evans* that the application of I.C.I. Devel- opments for an amendment, of the Official Plan be denied. It was being denied "for the reasons set out in the Planning Director's report." In his report Planning Director Kevin Tunney stated that the application for the amendment to the Official Plan deals with land that is designated as Rural in the Whitby's Official Plan and Permanent Agricultural Reserve Areas' by the Region's Official plan. The proposed designation would be commercial ànd would be for a "large shopping complex of 250,000 square feet." It would be a three to four-acre plaza. The Planning Director's report states that the poss- ible growth of Brooklin to 10,000-plus people has been suggested. The components and structure of Brooklin in the possible growth "should be implemented" in such a way as to focus on and support "the existing hamlet throughout the community's development period W its completion."
