She has won a $300 prize for her design of a cocktail lounge, last year, and this month started working as part of her course for a large design company in Toronto. Her special interest is design problems related to shopping centres. Free Press Photo Fire department gets 4 more men "The Fire Department is valuable to the Municipal- ity,'" said Coucillor Gerry Emm duÉing the debate on the Fire Protection budget which is estimatéd at $1,070,230 for this year. Councillor Bob Attersley agreed and moved the adop- tion of the hiring of four men for the Fire Department, as the Fire Chief Ed Crouch has asked for the basic minimum increase for the Fire Depart- ment. Fire Chief Crouch pointed out that the Whitby Fire Department had answered 13 multiple calls last year. That occurs when call has gone into the Fire Depart- ment and the Fire fighting equipment had been dis- patched, and another call from a different area of the Town had come in a about 10 minutes later which means another crew and emer- gency equipment.have to be dispatched, leaving only one person on duty in the Fire Hall when there should be.at least four, men on duty. He said the Department has been fortunate that they haven't been committed to more than a two-fire, multi- ple at a time. It would have been a disaster if the Depart- ment was called upon to answer a third and fourth multiple emergency call. Fire Chief Crouch pointed out that in the larger munici- palities the Fire Department Heads woùldn't be mhaking a moderate request for more men. They would make a demand for full allotment of men which would be 16 addi- tional men. He said that it takes 16 men to have three to four men on a truck to protect the citizens. Chief Crouch told the Council members, "you can do it al at once which would be a big impact on the taxpayers, or it can be done gradually, to, have the 16 men, by hiring them over a period of time. That can be cone by; hiring four men at a time." He pointed out that not only are the men hired but they have to go through a training period which should be completed before. the summer vacation time begins, in order to have trained men on call at all times. The Finance Committee also approved the hiring of two persons for the Planning Department. This does not increase the size of the Staff as members of the Planning Department Staff left last year and have not been replaced to date. An enterprising young Whitby resident who was recently mentioned in the Free Press Corridor Capers column is Sandra Greenaway, 20, of 124 Broadview Avenue. Miss Greenaway is com- pleting her final year in Interior Ar*chitectural Design at Humber College in Toronto, and has many aehievements to her credit. In her first and veond years at college, Miss Greenaway obtained the highest academic standing in her course, and in her second year she won a $300 prize for an entry in an interior design show student competition. Miss Greenaway, a resi- dent of Whitby all her life, attended Dr. Robert Thornton Public School and graduated from Anderson Collegiate in 1975. She excelled in art and architecture classes at high. school and received the architecture award for ber Grade 12 drafting class when she graduated. In 1976 she entered the Interior Design course at Humber College. "I found architecture too technical and I felt I did not have the talent for graphie arts," she said. "I chose interior archi- tecture design because I liked drafting and I liked to draw. Interior architectural design is not the same as interior decorating, Miss Greenaway explains. The work consists of drawing and drafting an interior design for a space within a building. Miss Greenaway has undertaken a number of hypothetical projects where she is given a space and told to do something with it. These have included boutiques, some residential projects, offices, children's play- grounds, educational institu- tions and conference rooms. As a second year project she designed a cocktail lounge with an Eskimo theme, and entered it in the International Interior Design Show at the Automo- tive Building at the Canadian National Exhibition in the summer of 1978. The project was judged in a student competition by a panel of judges at Saskatoon, and Miss Greenaway won third prize of $300. "Shopping centres interest me most as interior design problems," says Miss Greenaway. "Foi' my thesis project in my final year I am redesigning tbe Midtown Mail in Oshawa as a hypothe- tical project." Not ail of Miss Green- away's talents bave been directed towards bypothe- tical projects. In the summers of 1977 and 1978, she~bas worked in the engineering department of Loftbouse Brass doing draf- ting work and design jobs. In 1977 she had a part in designing the exterior of a building called Rotarco Ltd. at Burk's Falls, for Loft- house Brass, and in 1978, worked on tbe interior design for the same building. She also renovated ber parents' cottage at Lake Dalrymple, 12 miles north east of Orillia. This was an old building to which she added a modern design scheme. Miss Greenaway will graduate from her course at the end of April this year, but already she has started to work for three weeks as part ofher school;placement.pro- gram at a design firm in downtown Toronto near the lakeshore. Because of her high marks, she was placed in one of the top design firms in the city, .and may possibly be bired by them when she graduates. Basic drafting will be her initial work for this company. Miss Greenaway finds ihere are only five boys out of 24 students in ber class, but in the working world there are more men than women in her chosen career.
