Lack of ýtransportation bothers local businesses Transportation, or îack of it, i n Whitby is a big issue, particularly with businesses on Dundas and Hopkins Streets, former councillor Joy Thompson discovered when she did a survey for the Whitby Chamber of Com- merce last nionth. one. dealer said he em- ploys two students to wash cars at night, and if they cannot get to work by car they just don't show up, s0 the manager or owner end Up washing the cars. The owners say "It's totally ridiculous in a town of this« size," said Mrs. Thompson. One industry on Hopkins Street was very distressed at the loss 0f a perfectly good secretary for lack of trans- portation. The manager remarked that he constantly reads in the papers how the -Whitby and Regional coun-. cils are asking- for more industrial deveîopment, and asked how do they expect to get 'deveîopment 'when the plants- cannot offer a bus seryice to the potential employees.. Another commercial en- terprise said it had difficulty with low paid employees such as dishwashers, wait - resses and busboys who can- not afford cars and if they cannot get a ride, they can- not keep their jobs. One business near Anderson Street said a bus servi ce is needed because its seven or eight empîoyees al have to get to work by taxi, coming from both^ Oshawa and Whitby.
