Tom Hughes, Executive Vice-President of the On- tario Humane Society, in making the announcement said "Naturally I arn deligh- ted that the Ontario Humane Society bas once again led the way be providing unique animal care facilities. I see no difference between pro- viding permanent' lifetime care for a cat, if the owner is Ses your Dodge boys scratch and exercise freely.' The cat centre, which was re-opened.after being closed four years ago, was featured in the winter issue of The Animal's Voice, the paper of the Ontario Humane Society. The first residents of the cat care centre are 46 cats that came from a member of the society in Smith's Falls, who has undertaken to care for the cats for the rest of I I I prepared to meet the cost of providing that care, and providing the same lifetime home for an old horse or any other retired animal." Mr. Hughes said the facili- ties are good for cats because of their tempera- ment and theway they lend themselves to the environ- ment of the centre at Whitby. However, such a centre would not be suitabie for dogs, for they wouid cjuickly deteriorate and become extrernely unhappy, he said. The cat *bungalows are raised off the ground, are insuitated and heated by infrared heating, .and the cats have, unrestricted access to their houses and to the exercise areas. The cats are accepted into the lifetime care centre pro- viding they are fit and have undergone a period of isola- tion to determine that they are not incubating any dis- ease, especiaily a virus disease.' If neces- sary the irinoculation can be carried out by the Society and the immunity deveioped during the period of isola- tion. Another condition 0f ac- ceptance is that the Society has the right to find the animais a good home if this becomes availabie and if the cat's condition is such that a veterinarian decide *s that it must be put to sleep. The society has the right to do -this. There is a charge for the care of the cats which the owner must accept responsi-. biiity for in some satisfac- tory form. Ownérs of cats wishing to place their pets in the centre are-required to enter into an agreement with the Society, accepting the conditions under which cats are admit- ted to the centre. Oshawa.
