PAGE 12, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4,1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS Englis scho1 band cocert April8 On April 8 at 2 p.ni. there will be a free concert by the Stowmarket Schosý Con- cert Band, fromn Suffolk, England, in the main foyer of the Whitby Municipal Building. Ail citizens of the town are invited to attend this special concert by a young English band which is on a tour of the United States and Canada. Whiie in Whitby fromn April 6 to 8, the 47-member band 44 players and three staff) wil be guests in the homes of members of the Whitby Brass Band. In addition to the concert at Whitby, there wiIl be.a concert by the Stowmarket SchooIs'Concert Band at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto April 7. The Stowmarket Schools' Concert Band was founded in 1961 by its present conductor Derek Cable, and numbers nearly 90 musicians aged from fine to 18, who divide according to ability into four -bands. The Premier and Senior Bands have combined for the concert tour to the United- States and Canada. The, band enjoys an inter- national reputation having been heard in Spain, France, Germany, H ol1la nd b Denmark, Scotland and Canada and severai' parts of eastern Amnerica on a prev- ious visit in 1974. Television and radio broadcasts have been pre- sented in Spain, the United States, Denmark and Great Britain, and the band has seven long-playing records to its credit. The Fanfare, Players are frequently called upon for State Occasions in East Anglia and have heralded the Lord Mayor of London, Ambasssadors from 19 coun- tries, the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and Her Majesty the Queenand Prince Philip on the occasion of their Silver Jubilee visit to Suffolk. The band's repertoire ranges widely from six- teenth century Venetian composers through arrange-_ ments of the' ciassics to music of the twentieth cen- tury, both serious and popular. Yvonne Christie, chairman of the Durham Board of Education; Steve Hajdu, a teacher at West Lynde' Public School; and Dan Tomiinson, programn consultant for the Durham Board of Education, examine one of more than 450 works of art by students of Whitby's public elementaÏy-hd high schoois on exhibit at the Whitby Arts Station Gallery until April 15. The work of Separate Schools and the Ontario Ladies' Coliege will be on exhibit from April1 19 to 29.
