The Major Seri'es has changed somewhat this year and will be composed of a highly competitive four- team'league made up of Peterborough (Iast year's Mann Cup Champions>; Brampton (Ontario Cham- pions); Oshweken Warriors (a new entry from the Six Nations near Brantford) and Brooklin. Windsor, Owen Sound and Fergus have ail dropped back from Major to Senior B so the calibre of play in the Major Serip-. hculd be con- siderably upgraded. The hManui Cup emblemnatic of Canadian Lacrosse supre- macy >and the oldest sports trophy in Canada will be competed for in 1979 in British Columbia. General Manager Mike Gray wishes ta announce that Peter Vipond has agreed ta return as coach again this season. Pete is a veteran of "The Jim Bishop Se hool", having played Junior Lacrosse with the Green Gaels in Oshawa. Pete will be assisted by Zeny Lipinski, a former pro- fessional player with Phila- delphia of the National Lacrosse League. His experience, as a player and in a coaching capacity, should be a grreat help ta Brooklin's younger players comning up. Also assisting with the team will be Eric Branton, a former player' with the Brooklin Redmen, who is wellkInown in local lacrosse circles. Brooklin has been affil- iated over the past three seasons with the Whitby Builders and has protected ail their graduating players in the 1979 Major Series draft.ý They are Bryce Jordan, Larry Graham, Rob Gemmell, Chris Reed, Wayne Colley and, Tim Lintner. Teleý-kphone irproved Bell Canada is spending more than $500,000 to im- prove telephone facilities and keep pace with growth in the Whitby exchange, -Marion Crocker, local Bell Manager, said today. Work will start before the end of April ta provide an addif.ional 1,200 telephone lines in the industrial area along Hopkins Street. Con- duit and cable will be laid but this will not interfere with traffic. The cost is $131,000. The company will also be spending $373,000 for phone equipment in three new sub- divisions, Mrs. Crocker said. They are the Ash ýCreek, Garden Street and Anderson Street housing develop- ments. In Addition, to the report Mr. McEwen infornied the Operations Comrnittee and Council that the Officiai Opening of the Port Whitby Marina is scheduled for June 19, 1979. A 20-year-old Whitby man was ordered to do 100 hours of community service work, following conviction on a dangerous driving charge in provincial court last week. The court usually imposes substantial fines or jail terms for this offense, said Judge Norman Edmondson, but he gave the community service order as a result of the circumstances -of the case. The court was told that Gary James Daly, 600 Burns Street West, led police on a high-speed chase before he Local artist gets teaching grant Whitby artist Na ncy Steele has been awarded a grant by the Ontario Arts Council ta teach jewellery making at Anderson Collegiate. Under the awards regula- tions the artist has ta contact 'a school, in which he or she would teach and obtain ap- proval fromn the school board for the program. Nancy Sféele is well known in Whitby and teaches jew- ellery making at Whitby Arts Inc.
