Do we need to be spoon fed by any arm of Deuvelop South first say homne builders The proposed development of Brooklin is causing con- cern to the Durham Region Deveîopment Association, which represents at least six development companies. The companies fear that housing growth at Brooklin will. be given priority over subdivisions planned for the southern part of Whitby, says John Foley, a member of the association and presi- dent of his own development company. While plans are being made té expand Brooklin to a population of 10,000 five times its present size, hun- dreds of acres remain va- cant between Taunton and Rossland Roads, said Mr. Foley. Mr. Foley said the com- panies owning land for bous- ing projeets in the town 's southern section are con- cerned that Brooklin's ex- i pansion wiIl use up the capa- cn.ty of thie presefit sewer system in Whitby. The developers contend that Brooklin should not be American subsidiary acquîres DXOil Company A subsidiary of an Ameri- can où company Is to acquire control of DX Oul Company which has its head office on' Dund-as Street East In Whitby. DX Oil operates a chain of discount gas bars throughout south-central Ontario. The foreign investment review agency announced the purchase recently, allow- ing Natomas of Canada Ltd, of Toronto, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Natomas Co. of the U.S. to acquire control of DX Oil. DX Oul also operates a petroleum product terminal in Oshawa and a fuel oul marketing operation in this area. provided with sewers unless re!5erve capacity in the sewer system is provided for development in the south, he said. Mr. Foley said he consid- ered Brooklin's development premature in light of the amount of land to be deve- loped between Brooklin and the urban area of Whitby. He pointed out that Conso- lidated Building Corporation and other development com- panies owning land at Brooklin paid onîy $10,000 an acre, while land in the southern part of the town cost $30,000 an acre. The beneficial effect of lower land costs at Brooklin on the price of homes there will be offset by the Iower cost of servicing the land to the south, he said. The Durham Region Deve-' lopment Association has advised the Whitby town council of its concerns and will likely send its message to the Region of Durham as well, said Mr. Foley.
