Emm outlnes traffic safety needs Councillor Gerry Emm brought forth several traffic items during the new business section of the regu- lar meeting of Council last week stating he was con- cerned with the safety of pedestrians in the Town of Whitby. He pointed out that there are a number of new families moving into Whitby which is making an increase on the traffic conditions in the town. He asked Council to take into consideration the instal- lation of stop signs at the intersection of Walnut and Centre streets as this inter- section is very close to the Kinsmen Park. Councillor 'Emm asked if "stop signs coâ.d be installed at the intersection of Walnut and Centre streets as there are a number of new families in the area." He pointed out that Walnut Street is to be reconstructed ALL WORK GUARANTEED IN WRITING, Free Courtesy Car Available' Specialists in ACRYLICS, ENAMÈL, and ACRYLIC ENAMEL Expert service on all makes - Domestic and Foreign 405 Mary St. E. TO CHOOSE FROM ABLE REFUSED g 0 M E and asked the Works De- partment to have the signm ready and "in by the tine the reconstruction of Walnut Street is completed." His request was moved ta Operations Committee for a further report and recom- mendation. Councillor Emm also spoke in regard to the Anderson-Dundas-Hopkins Street intersection asking if the Whitby Representatives on Regional Council could have something done about the intersection. This part of the Town street system cornes under the control of the Regional Council. He pointed out that the intersection not only serves Anderson Collegiate and Vocational Institute; it also serves two other schools." "There are a fair number of children using that intersec- tion," Councillor Emm pointed out. He asked if the Regional Council would authorize the installation of pedestrian walk lights at this intersec- tion. Emphasizing his concern for the school children using the Anderson-Hopkins Dundas street intersectioný daily, Counillor Emrn stated he realized there are traffic lights at the intersec- tion at the present time. But the traffic signals are set for the vehicular traffic and there is nothing for the pedestrians using the area. "A child was almosthit there recentiy,"? he said. "The green lights were in the~ child's favour and the chiid was on the crosswalk when a turning vehicle which was going with the green lights just missed the child." Mayor Jim Gartshore said he thought the Regional Council is going to put in a new set of stop lights at that intersection after the recon- struction of that area. It was pointed out to the Town Council members that the Region has plans for the reconstruction of the Anderson-Hopkins-Dundas street intersection, the in- stallation of a new set and Lype of traffic lights which would include a pedestrian walk light and the widening of a portion of Anderson and Hopkins Streets particularly in the vicinityof the intersec- Ready for tion. Councillor Bob Attersley, one of Whitby's representa- tives on Regional Council said he is on the Regional Works Department Commit- tee and he "will take it up with the Regional Works Department." He was sche- duled to attend a Regional Works Department meeting the next day. springtime, seniors elect board Spring activities are begin- ning to blossom forth at the --Whitby Senior Activity Centre. An April Flowers Dance Party will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 21 at the centre. To celebrate the centre's fourth year, arrangements have been made for enter- tainment by the "Neder- landse Volksdansers" of Durham Region. This group appeared at the centre last year. On April 27 at 7:30 p.m. there will be a travelogue night with Dorthea Johnson. Plans and details for a trip in October will be discussed at this meeting. Last year 45 members enjoyed a trip to Florida, and plans are being made for a trip to a location yet to be decided, for two weeks this year. Plans are also going ahead for the centre's annual flea market which will be held May 12. Proceeds from this sale will go to the generai fund of the centre and ulti- mately benefit the members. Menbers are encouraged to save items from their spring cleaning for this flea market. Donations are accepted at the centre or call Emily Ashby at 668-4659. Square dancing will resume today, as Chuck and Gladys Cooper return from their holiday. Friday April 6 there will be a guest speaker on "Your Legal Life" upstairs at the centre. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Senior Citizens' Acti- vity Centre held their annual elections Friday. The 1979 Board of Direc- tors were elected as follows: for a three year term bf office, Emily Ashby, Richard England and Vic Igglesden, Those elected for the two year term of office are: Lynn Knight, Vic Reiger and Roy Prosser. For the one .year .term of office there was a tie vote for the third ballot. There are three members elected for each term of office and onthe third ballot electing the officers for the one year term there was a tie vote on two.names presented which meant instead of three the Nominating Committee Chairman Charles Hubbel- day was faced with four possible members for the one year term. The tie was broken by placing the tie votes in a hat and a member from the audience going up and pul- ling the nameout of a hat. Thus the members who will be serving on the Board of Directors for one year are: Jim Smyth, Arthur Sprague and Louis Sherlock. The chairman of the Board will be elected at a future meeting by the members of the centre and Board. The decision had been made that all members and the members of 'the Board felt it would be a more democratic way of electing the Chairman of the Board of Directors and thus reduce any possible friction that might arise in the future. might arise in the future.
