PAGE 16, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS New kits for cancer campaignfeaturing daffodils The Canadian Cancer Soci- ety's annual April campaign for fund is well under way. Following the most suc- cessful Daffodil Festival sponsored by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority girls, some 725 canvassers have begun their door-to-door campaign seek- ing donations which will con- tinue and further cancer research, will help educate themselves and others regarding cancer prevention' and will serve patients suf- fering from this dread disease. This year the canvassers will be using kits with a new look. The old familiar red and white colours have yielded to bright green and yellow with navy printing on - a white background. The new choice of colours is in recognition of the in-. creased popularity of the daffodil as a symbol of hope for the cancer sufferer and a constant reminder to the public to support the Society's campaign. As well, new multi-purpose pamphlets .printed in the same new colours will be given to every home along with the usual yellow plastic daffodil. Campaign Co-Chairman, Marion and Bill Irwin, are asking every citizen who has donated to the cancer cam- paign in some way to please wear his'daffodil throughout April in order to remind others to give too. This year the town is divided into 29 zones for convassing purposes. This is four more zones than in 1978, and it is anticipated that at least three more may be added in 1980 due to the increased housing activity around town. For each zone a captain, who recruits canvassers, is sought. Some zones are. too large for one person to recruit all the canvassers. In this case a zone is subdivided into smal- ler areas each with a captain who in turn searches out about 10 to 15 canvassers. The largest zones are lo- cated in the West Lynde and Blair Park sections of town where over 50 canvassers are required to cover the homes: As in-uci~ as possible, no canvasser is asked to can- vass more than 10 to 15 houses although in many cases many canvassers off.n volunteer to cover two routes. The Irwins are responsible for finding the 29 zone cap- tains. All but four captains from 1978 were able to accept their responsibilities again this year and Mrs. Zone Captains Shirley Jones and Helen Clarke join Whitby Cancer Campaign Co-chairman Marion Irwin in examining the new cancer kits which will be put to use in this month's door-to-door canvass. Pamphlets featuring the daffodil as the cancer campaign symbol, will be handed out at homes in Whitby throughout the month of April as the canvassers make their rounds. Response to these as well as appeals made through the news- papers, has been very good. "Nothing is more encour- aging" says Marion Irwin. "than answering your phone and having someone offer to help. Sometimes we work so hard to find canvassers, but most items our job is quite Girl gets easy as so many people respond in a favourable way." As well as the door-to-door canvassing extra monies are r'ealized through Special Events. One of these, the Kiwanis Club's Ladies' Great Ride, will again be held. Any other groups or organizations who might like to sponsor a special event, large or small, for the Cancer Campaign should call the Irwins at 668-4339. 5 days in jail for obstructing police "She was aiding a fugitive to escape the courts of Justice," said Provincial Court Judge Norman Ed- mondson as he sentenced Heather Victoria Mowat, 19, of 109 Dovedale Drive, to five days in jail. "When Police Officers attend with a warrant to arrest a person it is the responsibility of every citi- zen, regardless of relation- ship, not to obstruct the police in the course of their duty." Turning to the accused girl, His Honor said, as he sentenced her to jail, "it is to be known that for you and others that such obstruction of the Police will not be tolerated." She had pleaded guilty to the charge of obstructing police officers in the line of their duty. On the morning of March 15 two Police Officers went to 109 Dovedale with a Bench Warrant for the arrest of James Traquar. When the accused answered the door she told the Police that Mr. Traquar had left earlier in the morning. While in the house the Police heard a cough in another part of the house. The accused did not stop the Police as they went through thehouse and upstairs where the cough had been heard. The Officers found Mr. Traquar upstairs and arres- ted him. The Police were armed with a Bench Warrant for the arrest of Mr. Traquar who had failed to appear in Court in answer to previous charges that had been laid by the police.
