PAGE 18, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS Prime min isters'portraits are removedfrom library Recently the portraits of the Prime Ministers of Canada were removed from the front of the Whitby Public Library and placed in storage. The decision to remove the portraits was made by the Library Board in March or April, after there had been some differing opinions ex- pressed as to whether they would remain on the building a member of the board said. The board member said that the controversy goes back a few years, and Raymond Moriyama, the architect who renovated the library in 1977-78 had recom- mended their removal. "There was a general con- M.B.M. t.. sensus that they had served their time," the board spoke- sman said. "There was a fair amount of pro and con on the subject." The portraits of the prime ministers fromtSir John A MacDonald to Pierre Trudeau, were painted as a Centennial project in 1967 by two high school students, Ruth Read and Rebecca Ryland. They were installed by the Town of Whitby when the building was the town's municipal office, but since the building was turned over to the library in 1974 there has been some discussion at the library board about whether they should remain. The library board has writ- ten to the town council asking for direction as to the dispostion of these pictures. May 13 to 19 was Police Week all across Canada when the police offices an6 buildings were open to the Public. The Whitby Division of the Durham Regional Police Force was almost abandon- ned as far as public interest was concerned. There was only one group that visited the Division office on Rossland Road. The group was mainly children who had shown some interest and wanted to go through the Whitby Divis- ion Police facilities'near the close of Police Week, staff Sargeant Morley Nicholson, said. Staff Sargeant Nicholson was a member of the Whitby Police Force before the formation of the Durham Regional Police Force in 1974 and he compared former Police Week visits by the- public with the present - The Friendly Professionals 131 BROCK ST.N. He said during Police Week when the police office was downtown, on Dundas Street, in the former Municipal Building, now the Library, "it was visited reg- ularly by various groups. It It comes as rather a coin- cidence that the pictures were removed the same week that Pierre Trudeau was pleasant to see and know that so many people were interested in knowing what we were doing and how the police operate," he said. "It is really too bad," staff Sargeant Nicholson said. Road projects are to proceed soon The Town Council at its recent regular meeting authorized the acceptance of the low tender of Seal-Top Paving and Construction Ltd., for a number of road projects. The tender for $150,673.86 is for the construction of Hickory street from Dundas street south to Dunlop street and improvements to be made on Lupin Drive. The tender is subject to the approval of the Ministry of Transportation and Com- munications and the Regio- L-- FOLLOW THE SUN! nal Municipality of Durham.
