WHITBY FRE3E PRESS, WEDNESDAYe JUNE 20# 19791, PAGE 3 Ladies' college gets new name & principal After 105 years as Ontario Ladies' College, the Board of Directors of the College has unanimously decided to change the name of the school to Trafalgar Castle School. It was felt that the name Ontario Ladies' College (O.L.C. as it1 is fondly known) had to be updated due to the changing times, and many of the students agreed that theyý would be much happier with the change. The Board isalso' pleased to announce the appointment of C.T. Craig Kamceke as Principal of Trafalgar Castie School commencing august Mr. Kamcke received his Master's degree 'in Ilistory from Victoria College, Uni- versity of Toronto. He cornes to the school from St. Andrews College in Aurora, where he was head of the History Department and Head of Drama. Af ter many successful years, Dr. Reginald C. Davis will retire as principal as of August, 1979. His daùghter, Kathryn, will be graduating from the college this year with her Grade XIII standing. .Upon retirement, Dr. Davis and his family will reside in Oshawa. Mrs. Dorothy Perry will return to the school in Sept- ember, as Dean. Jose ph Sheard, mayor of Toronto in 1871-2, built Tra- falgar Castie in 1859 in Whitby, at a cost-of $70,000 for the Sheriff, Nelson'Gil- bert Reynolds. By comparison, at that time, a bank building cost $6,000 and a 'substantial home $2,000.1 Trafalgar Castie was buit in the Elizabethan style with towers and even secret chambers - ail thé attributes of a real'English castle. Local newspapers were calling it the'largest private detached residence on the continent, but to the ordinary ,,citizen, unused to such pre- tension in a pioneer cormity, it was known popularly as "Reynolds Folly". During the three years of, construction, neither Sheriff Reynolds nor the citizens in the area ever dreaffied that Trafalgar Castle would eventually becoine a school for, young ladies. The castie was the show- place of Whitby during its brief ownership by the She- riff and was the centre of the social life of the Town of Whitby. The Sheriff was to be host to a prince'and prime minis- ter and countless local digni- taries before he was forced by financial troubles to abandon Trafalgar Castle for a more modest home elsewhere in town. As the Sheriff sought some way to dispose of his costly. castie. a small hand of local men dedicated toward the establishment of a college for young ladies -began to meet in Whitby. In December, 1873, the Mayor Called for a meeting, to consider the establish- ment of a "female semi- nary". The cause of education for young women was being vig- orously promoted a t the time with'the churches taking the lead in establishing schools of higher learning through- out Ontario. The provisional directors met in February, 1874, and it was unanimously resolved that "Ontario Ladies' Col- lege" was used and it is not k nown how the name was selected. It may have had some relation to Lake Ontario which could be seen from Trafalgar Castie, or Ontario County of which Whitby was the.county town, but this is hot know for certain. dict for them an honored and durable fame". For 105 years the school has been flourishing ... due to its size (130 students) it'isnot' as well known as the local Toronto private schools, but academically it is certainly well established, and will hopefully continue for many years to come. Even before its officiai opening on September 15, 1874, the Ontario Ladies' College was attracting atten- tion across the province. Said the Mail, a Toronto daily newspaper, "For beauty, and healtbfulness of location, for comfort and pleasure of pupils these premises are without rival in the Dominion, and we. pre- 4 BRENTWOOD CUSTOM COVER'SELECTION S Special, $6480"" SPECIAL PRICES Prioes in effect until June 30, 1979. on Living Romf Tables, Bookcmses, Kitchen Sutes, Chssterflie, Mattresses and Box.Sprlngs, TOlslons, Etc.
