PAGE 10, WED14ESDAY OCTOBER 3 1979e WHITBY FREEPRESS Between You. and Me DY RUTH CH-AM BERS Abl:out CLOC Conservation authorities are based on a watershed basis and their primary purpQse is to manage the watershed. The area over which the Central, Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) has jurisdiction'extends from the lakte to the south and north to th his, about ten or' twelve miles away., to the west from Ajax and- to Newcastle on the east. AIl information including the-funding, how representatives are chosen both from the municipalities and the province to act as memnbers of the Authorlty can be obtained at the CLOCA office', 1650 D undas St. E., Whitby. The authiorlty is interested in avoiding past planning'errors where construction bas -been permitted and this can be very costly after the fact. CLOCA ctan inhibit further developmnent by retention of these.areas and may buy land for developmnent as conservation areas. The Purpie Woods is an example of enviromental protection, exercised. through restrictive planning. If a site is 0f significant importance it m ay -. warrant purchase by the Authority.-Aquisitionof the i Purpie Woods within the city of Oshawa serves to define just what'a watershedi sby, the virtue of being at a height.of land betWeen-Lake Ontario.and Lake Scugog watersh 'eds with water flowing both north and, south. This site has neyer been timbered and has ma.ny magnificent trees, mostly hardwoods, oaks, maples,' beechs and cherry, many, 0f them two or three hundred years old. Cranberry Marsh is unique as it is totally cut off from 'the lake 'and is noêt affected by the lake in any way. A wild life sancturary that people come to'from far and wide. So many birds are 'seen that is is impossibleto list théÎn here but to name a few, loons, Canada Geese, mallards, coots, rock doves and many.others. We mnust retai'n the few marshes we have left. They are a very important part of our environent. Had we presered o wetlands we would not have alI the trouble with algaeaiit lake as it seeks water when the marshes are destroyed ae finds it's way out into the lake. There is a balance in natu which' if destroyed 'car-iles achain of events al tëo o detriment.,Some of our most beautiful and productive mrshi in Ontario are gone thanks to short sighted people but thîs.i not liappen again with Conservation Authorities in charge. Something' I feel is,,,important, and ýthat should flot1 overlooked is that 'people are necessary around these par Some folk have homes near or very close to woods an marshes. Don't drive them out wily nilly; they, police thes spots just by being there and protect trees and wildlife frori vandals. There are stili people who cut trees, shoot birds anç pelt ducks with stones. They are apt to think twice if anyone ill around., CLOCA welcomes everyone to these areasat ail times of tIi year. ýThere are so many activities' something for every memnber of the family, ice skating, tobogganing, cross countr: skiing and maple syrup demonstrations in the spring. 1Wild flower walks, migratory bird outings, tree identificai tion hikes, winter wildlife walks are al offered with times and locations published in the news and. on informati 4on sheetsý available at the office. There are indoor film programs anc lectures throughout the year. For additionaî information about the authority and th programs offered' contact the information and educatior co-ordinator at 579-0411. Man y thanks to Mr. W.M. Campbell, General Manager o CLOCA who gave me information and explained many things about the authority Ring CHRYSIER, REBlATE ýFROM IO.40 ON SELECTED'" CARS.,& TRUCKS DIETFROM CHRYS LER.
