PA-GE 10,- WEDNESDAY, OCTOI49R, 31.p 1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS, rReport from IQueen 's Park I By GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC - Durham West) The first Ontario Career Week la taking place now, Oc- tober 29 through November 4. It la designed to assist Young people, and otherý job seekers, in career planning, and will hopefuily draw to the attention of the public and the media the career education programs now in. place, and'those belng planned. " j Acareer la not slmply a job. It can be several related jbs whlch ut Ilize a person's skils and meet Ms or berow n goals. By planning a career, versus takig a job, .-gn m- dividual bas -something to, work for. Once one goal la ac- compllshed, a person feels a sense, of pride. It is this pride that willl make one strive harder to meet the nexît goal. As well, many people have 'defined ýwhat career path they would like to take, but don't know how toi find it. Career education does flot just happen., It involves 153'dANNIVERSARY' ST. MARK'S UNItED CHURCH il A.M. Sunday, Novem ber 4th REV.JOHNGRIFFIN Ouest Speaker MUSIC BY ST. MARK'SýCHOIRS COME CELEBRA«TE, WORSHIP 'Career Week explained carefully planned programs that seek te, identify personal interests, apptitudes,' values, strenth and weaknesses in relation to individual occupations. Also important are programs that encourage the development of skills related to job-hunting, such 'as writing a lIetter of application and a reswne,ý preparlng for. interviews and learning about job satisfaction. Self-discipline must also be developed in mat- ters relating tepride and workmanship, completlng tasks on time and the obligations of day-to-day employment. Teacbing al Of this to Young people Is a difficult task te accomplish, but the Ontario Government belleves the c.- operative education. program may be. one answer. Accor- ding 'to Ministry of Education ýguldelines, students par- ticipating in this program must spend forty boura per year in the classroom, and eîghty hours Per year in the place of employment in order to get one credit. The co-operative education program consists of» a mix- ture of special academic courses along witb exposure to and training on the actual job.- As this work experience is considered to be part of achool training, (unlike the appren- ticeship prgrams) students do not receive a regular wage for the time spent in the workplace. Tbey do, bowever, receive a stipend per day to cover out-of-pocket expenses, like bus fare and coffée money. Co-operative education programns are flot a new concept in Ontario. The provincial government, along with a num- ber of boards of education, have successfully participated in this type of learning process. However, to become a truly effective method of educating our Young people, it requires the support -and recognition of not only governiment, but also labour unions, corporations, businessmensca agencies, students and teachers. eSca Today,, new measures are being taken to provide Young people with skills that match labout market demands. It is important to be aware of the great varletY of careers available and not be restrcted to the traditionai synboi of success,.i As we enter the 1980's career education and guidance has becomeé a 'crucial factor li dealing wlth the challenges of both youtb employment and productivity lI Ontario.
