Between You w and Me' I By RUTH CHAMBERS Buses and money, an Issue whîch' can become an emetional one and too could become a great political foot- bail- If you were a &"4political animal" wciuld you get into the game? I thlnk I would. Too good an opportunlty Wo miss because one needs tW cultivate issues, certainly emotional ones because this lu where the votes are. Maybe we can finda rmlddle Uine and give a few thoughts toelther side. l None of us are free of bias. If 1 needed a bus service to Iliplernent rny life style and many do, my bias would lead me tdbelieve that we need buses above ail else. If I wvas biased in the other direction and felt public tran- sportâtion Was a lost cause I'd be on the other side of the fence. Surveys Wo me are a total boss. A very poor dernonstration of public opinion. Thlnk of our population, lu this represen- tive of the rnajorlty? No, it only shows that a very umal minorlty of people aven bothered to vote. A non issue and a waste of tirae. WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAy. NOVEMBER 7, 1979, PAGE 13 Are the buses necessary?9 Public opinion poils are blased and neyer impress me. They are often used to great advantage as figures jump before your eyes and often the immnediate thougbt 1 here lu the truth." People give answeres to poil takers for a varlety of reasons and generaily think it cornes stralght from the heart or mind; sometlxnes yes, sometinies flot. Thlnk of the influences whlch can alter their thinking or cause them to give a biased view. If 1 was anxlous about a transportation system I would ask My Council member and/or the Mayor to give me ail the facts and figures and their opinion after taking everything ln to due consideration. This being done I would realize that not more than a dozen people had cailed to ask for or demand a bus service. A number of people who cal are against a bus service. Apparently they are flot cailn and making great demandu nor are they even callng to air their views. So now we do corne to the issue. Yes, we do need -a bus service for the elderly, the needy, wlves without car and countless others. Wç need transportation from east W w*est and from north to south. No haif way measures. We are not a tightly knit community but quite a large sprawl of widely spread pockets of commercial and residential areas. No one wants to walk any great distance to catch a bus. A young mother wlth a couple of toddlers and maybe a few packages, an elderly person walking- through snow or ramn they certainly would be better off to walt until they could drive or be driven. Su for Whltby it would'have to be a very comprehensive undertaking. At this Urne Whitby cannot be ail things to ail People. We are gmowlng at a trernendous rate, maybe too fast for comfort. This brings many problens tW the fore which must be solved and resolved. The other side of the coin; no we do not need puiblic tran- sportation at this Urne. Can we afford such a los because thisis as much as part of it alasthe ssternîtelf?. If we could decide to wait for a couple of years until our rapid growth slows down a bit an.we could put It al l nt proper perspective. Then we rnlght be able to "afford" a yearly losa. Lets put firut tliings first. Yes we do need'a bus systern but lu now the Urne? Fromn what 1 have been told or from what 1 have read there 18 not a bus service in Canada or the U.S.A. that pays it's own way. They ail operate at a losu, often a horrendous losa. They are a losing proposition. I could quote facts and figures by the score, percentages by the dozen and it always adds up Wo losu. To operate a service we must have eight hundred passengers a day, the buss, one hundred and seventy six tbousand dollars.
