WEDNFS'DAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1979, PAGJE 1 Faniily has new Canadian home due" to local churchý The plight of the Viet- namnese boat people has flot gone unnoticed in Whitby. Last September, the Hebron Christian Reforrned Church welcomed its first Vietnamese refugee family. Thanh and Suong Nguyen and their three young chlldren under five were taken'to their new home in North Oshawa. The churcb supplied them with a fully furnished bouse with cupboards ful of groceries donated by church members at a prevlously held sbower. Nguyen, wbo speaks some Englisb, had been a naval officér and bis wife, a kmn- dergarten teacher, in Viet- nam before the end 0f the war. At the end of the conflict, Nguyen spent a few years in a concentration camp ac- cording to a church spokesman. The family escaped on a small boat two meters wide and spent three days and nightà in it before arriving in Malaysia where they spent six montbs in a refugee camp before coming to this country. Two weeks after their arrivai, Nguyen's wife gave birtb to their fourtb child, a daughter named Ann who weighed five pounds at bir- Other ,members o f Nguyen's farnily were also* 'brought to this area., SHis , younger brother, Thanh'Troung lives with bim and bis other brother and bis Stu dents graduate Two Whitby students bave received their general Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo. The older Nguyen brothers are employed by Sklar furniture, a company that in the words of a cburch spokesman "bas been the most co-perative and willing to give priority to these Vietnamese refugees.po "Language instruction is very important to the Viet- namese," the spokesman said. "They are eager to learn our Canadian ways. " He said that two of the adults are attending evening Englisb classes at Osbawa's 0'Neil Collegiate while members of the cburch in- struct others at home. There is a sadder note, however. 1"Two of the Nguyen children attended the special kindergarten class at St. Mary of the People Church (Oshawa). They were doing well and looked forward to their bi-weekly sessions, " the spokesman said. "Uinfortunately, these classes are now' discon- tinued because of a lack of volunteers."
