Public placesi bad condlition The spread of a samonella outbreak earlier Faiiew Lodgea Duhamy' Fis summoder aDuhtm' Region run home for the aged,.was, "intensified" by crarnped quarters and few washroom facilities in the infirniary, a- public in- stitutions inspection panel said in a report that was filed in County, Court last week. Howiever, the panel of' four men and three women said that they were told that the contaminated food, which had been a secondary factor in the deaths,0f two elderly residents,*of the home, had come from outside the facility. The panel recommended in its report to Judge Joseph Kelly that the washroom facilities in the 29 year old building be modernized "as soon as money and space allow." They added that 'the morale of the 200 residents was "very high" although they noted that with a bed- care waiting list and one floor elused down at the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital "it does not make sense in hunian terms that available regional facilities are not being used to thefullest. " The panel ýalso inspected and, found that the Whitby Senior Public School was in 4"disappointing condition." in the report, the panel listed the followinig defeets: - badly leaking roof;, - some furniture was in need of repair; - broken windows; - carpeting in one roomi rip- ped and tomn. The panel also noted that the construction of new sub- divisions in the area will bring the school's population up to capacity. (It's capacity is 530 and presently houses 462 students). The panel found that the brick work on the exterior of the Durham Region headquarters -is deteriorating to the point where it is "an eyesore and we believe that permanent structural damage is possible. " The heating is "erratic" the panel said and recom- mended that the building be brought up to energy con- servation standards. '46We also fell that security guards should be on duty at nights and.that a no-parking ban on the circular drive in front of the building be en- forced. " Ir M M I ATTENTION 1I.A.W MEMBERS R.L.
