Misissuga Conimunity Editor Production Manage Print & PromotlonaJ Manager CIassiflsd Ad Mailing Permit No 460Q Member of tre imust fo ha<ppen again, an-ytime ln the aftermnath of the tragedy at Mississauga a few weeks ago, If is logicai to expect emotional, even* distorted and extreme reac- tions. The probiems of men and their ýgaver- nments .re neyer solved'by those who react emo tionaîîy or unthinkingiy. solutions to grave probiems are found only by reasoning men and oniy leadership resoives and averts a crisis. Despite ouf headiine story, the tragedy of Mississauga can happen flot only ln Whitbybut- ln every other community flot only in.this provin- ce but in this country. There are many reasons for this.. Our level of understanding the world about us has not advanced as fast as our level of technoiogy or our knowl edge of science. Our leaders, especiaiy those at the municipal and regionai levels are a reflection of ourselves < and, therefore, they understand as littIe of the * protbiem as we. Secondly, their lack of understandIng tends to make them Ignore, deny or disavow the existan- ce of'the problem. As a method of ensuring their * poilticai survival they* say to their constituents that there, is no problem and then deny respon- sibility when the cirlissfilnaliy occurs. Whie the, blamne may be laid -on a specif ic company or person for the tragedy at Mississauga the' final responsîbîîîty must lay with the goverfiments involved, their.scientific and engineering advisors and ultimately witli ourselves, the electorate. The tragedy of Mississauga can be averted by reasonable men taking the logical and necessary action. To take this action our leaders ln goverfiment; municipal, regional, provincial, and fed6rai must acknowledge the e,istance of the problemr and put their experts to work to effect a solution. The oniy way they can be made to face the probiem is If we, the electorate, face the problem and then, force them to face the problem. We do not have the expertise to prevent the occurance of Mississauga here in Whitby but the municipal, regional, and provincial governments do.- They have the resources, they have the abiiity, they have the money; public pressure can make them realize their responsibility. Mississauga must flot happen again, not In Whitby, not anywhere, at any time. The next time, lives may be lost, an d 1Ives are more Important than money and government., Sa ve the ca irn, reader saYS Dear Sir:. i arn concerned abou the Historic Cairn at Kendalwood, and Dun- das St. 1 don't think It should be remnoved and have written to the council. Enclose please findý a copy of mpy letter maybe the Historic àociety would support this request. George Lofthouse Gentlemen: 1 noticed ln an article published ln a recent edition of theOshawa Times that the K-Mart Shopping Centre was contemplating an ex- pansloèi.Reference was madý-e to the Stone Cairn- with the obser- vation that It might be remov ed. 1 would like to register a protest againat any attempt to remove this Historical Cairn as it Is one of the last symbols of our pioneering past. Permission was granted ýby a previous, owner of tiis property to have the Cairn erec- ted at its present site. As it now exIsts it presents no hazzard to traffic and it is struc- turaliy- sound. The Cairn is the property of the Community and i think every effort shouid be made to see that it is not sacrlficed to the cause of crass commercialisme Lofthouse Brass Manu- facturing Lt. Ican 't read thefineprint on governmentforms DearSir:- 1 feel it s Most Im- portant that is istime that a standard sîze print .is legislated 'for any and aIl documents' of importance, etc, that la satIsfactory to alI. I lodged complaints wlth severali ndîviduals regarding the "lny" print on 'driver licence- renewal" and "car registration" forms and have not see'n any im- provements as yet. ,Whlle the "tiny" print can be read by pers ons with average eyesight, even theni you almost need a '"magnlfylng glass"' to readthe print or are- forced to pur- chase eye glasses even though otherwlse you have no problemalf S It is disgusting that more "consideration" is ,not given to the "size" f print, for the benefit of those Who are -not gifted with average eyeslght and senior citizens, as well. Whlle 1 can stIli see the- fine print, there are many Who cannot. -F o rcin g . ,- "tw o languages" .does not help this probleri, resultîng ln 'the tlny print, on most goods Purchased ln grocery stores, pharmacie's, pet shope, etc,' etc, on, labels. Have you also noticed large signs ln shopping centres 'In varlous cities and towns Where the signa are "upsîde down"? i wish more people would wake up and voice their commenta, complainte, etc, ifthey do not agree wlth thlngs. Let's have more "icommon sense"l Thank You, P. Stewart Whitby .M» Kiw *Robln Lyso AM Yours truly.
