WIitliBN FREEPRE SS, WEiDNI -SD)A\ JANU \RY 7,I108 1, PAGE 15S WHI1TB3Y FREE PRESSç) FOR YOUR DINING PLEASUREW Verndah: a dining tréat By BARRY MURKAR Free Press Staf f If you have not visited the Verandah Restaurant at 40 King, West, in Oshawa, you are in for a dining treat. The restaurant has just recentty corne under new ownership and mnanagernent, and shortly wiil be known as Bailen- tino's. The new owners are John Nyhuis and Michael Mutstani, and they have plans for rnaking their new restaurant one of the rnost popular dining roorns in Durhamn Region. John who carne to Canada frorn Hoiiand 14 years ago, tearned the art of cooking at the Hotel Sehool in Swit- zerland. He worked in severat European restaurants before rnaking bis rnove to Canada. Once here, he got a job with the Canadian Pacific Hotles in Montreal and in Winnipeg. He arrived in Oshawa about two and a baif years ago and was ernployed at the Paul Giovis galtery for severai rnonths. He left tbere and went to the Veran- dah, where he worked as both chef and manager. Now with bis new partner, he is rnaking plans to expand the business and make it a popular place to dine. John plans to have a businessman's tuncheon at reasonable prices and is of- fering a get-acquainted special for $6.95 that is as good as you couid get anywhere. The dining room is L- shaped with dark wood paneliing, wine coioured drapes on the windows and very attractive and corn- fortable chairs. At each table there are low-backed and high-backed chairs. The tables are neatly set and the service is good. We ordered the New York sirloin and the Surf and Turf. This cornes with a salad plate, garlie bread, baked potato and vegetable. John cooks bis steak and then covers it >with bis own speciai sauce, that tends flavour but takes notbing away frorn the taste. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the PHI building at the corner of Centre and King streets in downtown Oshawa. Take the elevator up and you are there in seconds. Atong the front of the building is a verandah looking out over King Street. A smatl dance floor has provided for dancing and there is live entertainrnent frorn Tuesday thru Satur- day. The music starts at 9 p.m. and runs through until 1 a.rn. Frankly, we were very pieased with John's layout, the food, the service and the prices. During the summer mon- ths, tables will be piaced out on the verhandah so people rnay dine outside if they so wish. Inside or outside the layout and atmosphere is posh, but within the means of the average pocket book. The food at this restaurant is of the best quaiity and very weli prepared. We cani assure you that you 'will have a lunch or a dinner that you wiil enjoy very much. CEDRICK'S 173 Brock Street, North Whitby. A popular dining spot.
