BASELINE MOTORS Whitby Town Council has directed staff to look into the possibility of designating Inverlyn as a heritage building under the Ontario Heritage Act. Council made the direc- tion at its meeting last Mon- day after receiving a report from-, the Local Architec- tural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC). Inverlyn, located at 1300 Giffard Street, was con- structed 120 years and gained notoriety in the early 1970's when it was used as the site for the CBC television series "The Whiteoaks of Jalna. " According to Eugene Henry, the Free Press' staff historian, Inverlyn is "Whitby's number one residence that has remained in the same family for a number of years. " The house was designed by John Shier, a -native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland when he studied civil engineering and land survey orign under his father. Shier built the house for William Laing, who established one of the largest merchantile and' grain businesses in this part of Ontario. In 1859, Laing unsuc- cessfully ran for the Parliament of Upper Canada in a bid to *unseat future Ontario Premier Sir Oliver Mowat. In 1863, Laing was elected Mayor of Whitby after ser- ving as reeve for a couple of years. In 1865, Laing left the house with his six survinving children after his wife died in childbirth. Five years later, the house was purchased by George McGillivary who was a staunch loyalist in the rebellion of 1837. McGillivary served on the town council and on the Whitby Board 0f Education for several years prior to his death in January, 1884 at the age of 90. According to Henry the house is -beautifully designed in the Georgian style." He added that Inverlyn was constructed and decorated in -good taste" and with a "'good design" and is one of the "historical shonirps of Onta rio. " The house is not flam- boyant "as is Sheriff Nelson Reynold's castie" (now the Tralfalgar Castle School), Henry said adding that there could not be "two separate reidences thatare mredsL building, bothatare museda differnet, " Henry noted that the house S V N has been in the same family since it was purchased in -- 1870 by Gillivary. U r IO "It is an unusual thing where generations of one family live in a house," he said. The present resident In- verlyn, Catherine Schell, has given her written con- sent to the designation which specifies that only the ex- terior of the house be main- tained in its historical form.
