According to union spokesman Erwin Meier, the local will not be afraid to walkout over a contract again. This was the first time in the history of the region that the workers had gone on strike. "We w9n't be afraid next time," he said. "The first time it's always so scary." Meier said tbIat while the workers were satisfied with the agreement, the union will seek an improved cost of living allowance during the next set of negotiations. The allowance agreed to in the settiement will be kicked in whenever the cost of living rises above the negotiated 10 per cent level. "We're going to get a bet- ter COLA next time around, or else," Meier said. "At least they'li know we're serious. " Terry Stevens, the region's commissioner of personnel said thL.t Durham's contingency plan, that calîs for the about 50 management staff members to fi in at water and sewer treatment plants was tested and worked well. As many of you are aware, a public meeting was scheduled for that day organized by con- cerned citizens, concerning the proposed closure of the Kmn- smen Pool. Personally, I found it most encouragfing to see s0 many people in attendance. t was also good to see such a diverse cross-section of the population - not only in terms of age group, but also geographically. The concern about the pool stemmed from a resolution of couincil to close this facility until the necessary repairs to the structure which posed considerable danger to users of the pool were rectified. They were also concerned about the pooi's future, fearing permanent closure. During the couit, of the evening, suggestions and new ideas were discussed, with the end resuit being a formation of a small gîioup froîn among the citizens present agreeing to appear as a delegation at the next meeting of the operations committee. It appears that as a direct result of this meeting, a way may be found which will enable us to keep the pool open this year and for years to corne. This solution wiil undoubtedly be welcomed by council and concerned citizens alike. I chose to write about this meeting since to me it vividly demonstrates the benefit to the cornmunity that can be derived from such public input. I have always maintained and emphasized the importance of open communication, in a frank and honest fashion, between elected officiais and the electorate. In this instance, through this exercise, we ail gained from the experience, and on my part, 1 wish to thank all those who attended the meeting for affording mie the benefit of their views. @mmmzzmý V4
