Wh itby Library holds "ILet's Play T.V." Statistics have shown that many children spend more time wat- ching television than they do in school. For parents concer- ned about this situation, the Whitby Public Library is holding a new kind of workshop next month to encourage children to think about what they watch on television and why. The aim of the program is to help children become selec- tive television viewers. The program was designed by TV Ontario, the provincially funded public television net- work, and is built around creative drama workshops. TV Ontario staff will introduce 7 to 12-year- old children to the world behind the television screen in a series of "Let's Play TV" sessions. The program is designed to introduce children to dramnatic techniques, script building, the roles of ac- tors, directors and technicians and the ef- fect of camera angles. A "Let's Play TV" workshop will be held at the Whitby Public Library on July 13 at 2 P.m. Parents interested in having their children participate should con- tact the library for tickets beginning the week of July 6. The workshop begins with warm-up games and children discussing or drawing their favourite shows and characters on television. Then, working in small groups, children put to;g-ether a short scene using mime or simple dialogue. They will be en- couraged to develop programs that do not rely on violence. Group members take turns being actors and cameramen/directors, the latter filming the scene through a car- dboard frame cut out in the shape of a television screen. It is hoped that the children participating in the program will begin to understand why a scene is memorable, suspenseful or joyful and will also begin to see this medium through more critical eyes. Relief sought Members of Durham Regional Council are expec- ted to approve a motion at its meeting today that will ask the Ontario government to reconsider at part of its budget that will cost the region an estimated $35,800. When Ontario Treasurer Frank Miller tabled his budget in the legislature last month, he withdrew the preferential fees for motor vehicle registration that municipalities had previously enjoyed. The new provincial policy would create an ad- ditional cost to the region of $7,800 for police vehicles and another $28,000 for other regional vehicles. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema objected to the provincial change of heart on the matter. "It's just another way they're getting us to pay more of the shot, " he said.
