WHITBY FREE PRESS, TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1981, PAGE 5 More suitable location needed for Canadian Tire Dear Sir: It has come to my attention that a new Canadian Tire Store will be opening soon in Whitby. It is my opinion that a new store wil mean more jobs and more money for the 1 community. Terri- ficl This ail sounds well and good, un- fortunately the new store will be located in a residential area. The area is now zoned R2 and R3 but it is proposed to be changed to commercial use even though it is indeed smack In the middle of a residen- tial area. Why in heaven's name do we want a store in such an area when there are so many other more suitable sites available? The new Canadian Tire Store will be behind Bowman Ave. and facing the new Terry Foxour hero EDITOR'S NOTE: With the aid of public pressure concernIng the matter, the federal government decid- ed last week to release a Terry Fox commemorative st- amp without walting the traditional ten year period following death. The final design will be selected by the stamp advisory committee, which will invite a group of graphic artists to submit proposais. The stamp itself s due to be issued in April, 1982, two years after Fox's Marathon of Hope which was halted half-way across Canada when the cancer, that claimed his right leg three years ago, was detected to have spread to his lungs. The following are three letters sub- mitted to the Free Press by grade three and four students at West Lynde Senior Public School prior to the government's deci- sion. School in Whitby. We want a stamp issued In honor of Terry Fox. Terry Fox cared for others. He wan- ted to help the Can- cer Society to raise money. If we wait a -decade after his death to Issue a stamp com- memorating his bravery people will have forgotten Terry's fine deed. Why wait until Terry is dead? Act now and have our hero Terry on the next stamps issued. postal officiais say "I Can't". Terry Fox never said "I Can't." He was courageous and determined to reach his goal. He was very unselfish. He was a national hero. He deserves It pienty. issued bec ause Terry Fox ran to make money for people with cancer. He rain through rain or shine Just to raise money. He wouldn't stop or slow down. He ls a nice man who ls determined, coura- geous and very nice. P.S. He'd look great In a stamp. Crawforth St. ex- tension. Now we won't only have traffic problems on Dundas St. but also on Crawforth St., Bowman Ave., and Elizabeth Cres. This will create a special problem due to the fact that there is an elemen- tary school on Crawforth St. I can't wait until I hear the news of a child being injured or perhaps killed because someone wasn't watching for children crossing a street while they were on their way to have their car's oil changed. Not only will the traffic cause congestion, but automobiles in for servicing in the seven bay service centre Canadian Tire proposes for its new facility will have to be road tested somewhere. Where else will they be road tested, but on the quiet residential streets in the area? Surely Canadian Tire along with our town planner can find a more suitable site than Crawforth St. to build a new store? If not, we might as well move ail our homes to the ramp of the 401 highway. Michael Connors, 223 Stewart St. EDITOR'S NOTE: The area residents are holding a second meeting to disctiss this matter on July 2 (Thursday) at 7 p.m. Committee Room 1. The sub- Ject will come up officially for con- sideration by Whit- by's Administrative Committee at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 6. CATCH TED WATSON'S STRAWBERRY EXPRESS PICK YOUR OWN III I.'
