In making that statement asat week, At- tersley saîd that workers are now preparlng the 51-acre site that is located near the Oshawa-Whitby border south of the Highway 401. The official sod tur- nmng is expected to take place sometime this month. The then Minister of Consumer and Com- mercial Relations Sid- ney Handleman first proposed the construc- tion of the 60,000 square foot building in 1977. At that ime, the an- ticipated cost was $40 million. By 1M8 that figure had rose to $60 million. Ontario Revenue Minister and Durham West MPP George Ashe recently said that that coet la now $75 million. The awarding of the contract to actually un- dertake the construction of the building is exPec- ted to take place sometinie this nionth as well wlth the work beginning immnedlstely afterwards. CANADIAN TIRE STORE Ares residents have held two public meetings concernîng the possible intrusion of a Canadian Tire Store in a residential area between Bowman and Elizabeth Cres. A store of that magnitude would be a boom to Whitby's economy, but the proposed location leaves a lot to be desired.
