WIIITBY FREE PRESS, VEDNESDAY. itU LY 22,19'8 1, PAC F, i * B~kin Byines lBy Roxanne Reveler HI THERE: Ail is quiet on the northern front. Due to lack of enthusiasm, or interest, or a conibination of the two, Brooklin and surrounding area has been tem- porarly closed down... .or so it would appear. Although they say "no news is good news", I find that to be unforgivable, so rather than have nothing appear at ail, I will, in the hopes of flot becoming repetitious, jog your memory a littie. OUR LIBRARY IS FOR KIDS THIS SUMMER The children's summer program at the librar in Brooklin is greatly appreciated, judging by the number of children participating in the many varied events this year. This week's highlight is Brooldi*n youth gets award Lawrence Greaves, 18, (above) was presented to H.M. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother during the latters recent visit to Toronto where he was presented with the Duke of Edinborough's Award (goid). The Brooklin youth took five years to complete the program and had to participate in four different to be eligible. The areas were hobbies, expeditions, service and athletics. Greaves' hobby is playing the guitar and for his expedition he and some friends undertook a 150-mile bicycle journey through the Bancroft area. His service was a term as head boy of the Lakefield College private school from which he recently graduated. During his career at the sehool, he was a member of both the hockey and soccér teams as well as passing the Canada Fitness Test. Greaves was one of fine Lakefield students who received the gold Duke of Edinborough's award. The sehool also has produced five per cent of ahl the awards given to Canadian students. This fait, Greaves will attend the University of Western Ontario to study economnics and law. You would ail do the library a big favour if you wouid take ail your books back before you go on your holîdays. JULY FLOWER SHOW Don't forget the flower show at Fairview Lodge on Saturday, JuIy 25. This should be an exciing event because, as mentioned last week, it will be the first show put on in July by the Brooklin Horticultural Society. Try to make it, I know you will. be im- pressed. NEW FEATURE Commencing next week, I wiIl be starting a special section in Brooklin Bylines entitled "Meet Our People". There are so many citizens in the Brooklin, Ashburn, Raglan area that are totally fascinating, I feel it's a shame they have not before shared their talents and anecdotes with the rest of the community. These persbons will corne from al walks of life. Maie, female, farmers, business people, artists, writers, community servants, long- time residents, newcomers, up and coming youngsters, you name it. Although I know a (air amount of people, I don't pretend to know everyone, s0 if you know of any interesting people, be a namne dropper, let me know. I'm sure everyone, including myseif will find their story delightful. TIP 0F THE WEEK Cheaters sometimes do prosper, especially in the kitchen, especially in the hot sticky weather when the kitchen is the last place on earth you want to be.
