"Rodeo Week" WýiITBY FREF PRESS, Wl DNI -SDAY, AUIGUST 2(1 198 1 PA(11 3 September B to 1,3 The cowboy riding his horse on the lonesome plain la a fantasy that is probably shared by everyone. Residents of Whitby will get a chance to live a little of that dream when the rodeo comes to town on thle weekend of September 12 and 13. In fact, the entire week of September 8 to 13 will be proclaimed "Rodeo Week" through- out the town and special events have been plan- ned. Aside f rom the rodeo itself, the highlight of the week will be a street dance hosted by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce on the Friday night. The dance will start at 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dominion Plaza on Brock Street South. The chamber will be hiring a western band and the stage and picnic tables will be provided by the Whitby Parks and Recreation Depart- ment. The dance will also have a mechanical bull, provided by the Corral Restaurant, Oshawa, for those who want to find out what it is like to ride the bucking bull. The Whitby Rotary Club will have their mobile unit on the scene to provide a flapjack dinner for the dancers at a minimal cost. However, admission to the dance itself is free. Throughout the week, the chamber will try to instili cowboy fever in local residents - especially those shop- ping downtown. Anyone found without a cowboy hat on their head in the downtown area that week will be thrown into the stockade for a couple of minutes. The town is also hoping to put up a portable jail in which to hold the most serious offenders. Hopefully the entire downtown will have a western air about it throughout the week with merchants display- ing western apparell. The Chamber of Commerce will also be having a children's coloring contest that week. The entries will be distributed through the public sehools and the winners will receive complimentary family tickets to the rodeo per- formances. The Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a rodeo flea market beginming at 10 a.m. on the Saturday (Septem- ber 12) at the north-east corner of the Iroquois Park Complex. This event wUll feature a beer tent sponsored by the Big Brothers Asso- ciation, the Rotary Club's commissary and the mechanical bull as well as the sale of western wear. However, the high- light of the week will be the performances of the Hfigh Country Rodeo on September 12 and 13 at 2 p.m. on the grounds on Iroquois Park. The rodeo will come to Whitby after finishing a stint at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). The rodeo itself will feature over 100 horses, ladies barrel racing, bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, saddle brone riding, caîf roping, bull riding, trick riding, trick roping, clown acts and much more.
