Interim final reports wll bave to be ready for council later in the fail. Consequently, tbls Sep- tember meeting will be useful for ail task force members to get back on track again. More Whltby disabled people are atm needed to give opinions and to help formulate recom- mendations. Tbursday's meeting wil be open to anyone from the public to attend and tempor- arily or permanently dlsabled people are par- ticularly encouraged to come. Throughout the Durham Region and, indeed, throughout the country citizens are becoming more aware of the noeds of the dis- abled. Tblngs such as ramps,, automatic doors, convenient park- ing spots, apecially built wasbroomn facilities are being provided by government, businesses and industry and are easily recognized by the famillar wheelcbair symbol. In Whltby, council bas given approval to the ramping of curbe in tbe old core section of town. The library, too, bas ensured that its facili- ties are totally ac- cessible to the disabled. An elevator gives ac- ceas to the upper floor, telephones are at a con- venient belght for wheelcbair usera, washroom facilities are good, and a wiluing staff stands ready to assiat aIl, disabled or other- wise. Anne Hope-Brown, Whitby branch head, when attending a library workshop last sprlng brought back in- formation regarding library services for the dlsabled. As a result a work- shop is to be held wlth local library staff and Task Force Access Committee Chairman Ken Thoms to familar- ize ail the staff mem- bers witb bandling wheelchairs and dis- abled people par- ticularly with respect to emergency situations such as fire. Chief Librarian, Mrs. McFadyen says, "Whit- by's library is well equipped for use by dis- abled people. " Ken Thoms, a frequent user of lîbrary services, comrnents, "It's excellent! I've used the library for some time, ita main fadilities are great and the staff is extremely willing." Thoms' disability resulta from multiple sclerosia confining him to a wheelchalr. Conse- quently, bis input into the Mayor's Task Force has been* extremely valuable. However, he, too would like help from other diaabled people. Did you know that there is borseback riding for handicapped people? Do you know where to find informa- tion about Huntington's Ohorea? Do you know how to join the Oshawa and District Handicap Club or to find out about a program for training handicapped aduits i business procedures? The answers to these and other questions can be found in the llbrary's bookiet which. is available on request.
