C.H.O.O. Radio Station came through once again to support Whitby. Their co-ordination with our community services director, Barry O'Neill, was definitely professional in every way .... .we even made it on the front cover of the T.V. Focus Magazine - looks like Whitby is going "country". The Whitby, Ontario - Yours to Discover Colouring Contest received recognition for eleven winners during the council meeting September 14. Two special "Out of the Province Awards" went to the Province of Quebec (Celine Tremblay) and to Milan, Michigan U.S.A. (Janet Buccirosso). I would like to take this opportunity to express my apprecia- tion to our judges, Miss Linda Poulacik, director of the Station Gallery and their chairman, Mr. John Nixon. It was a difficuit chore to make a choice from such excellent submissions of approximately 500 entries. A special thank you to ail the children who entered and shared in this project - we cer- tainly have many budding artists. The Whitby Mayor's Task Force on the Disabled is progressing on schedule and eight committees wiil be presenting their final recommendations for review and approval on Thursday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, Whitby Municipal Building. I would certainly urge the public to attend and support this project - your input is very valuable in establishing future goals for the disabled in the Town of Whitby. During the meeting held Thursday, September 3, the chairman of the task force, Councillor Joe Drumm mentioned the excellent art showing of a disabled artist, Hazel Self, being shown at the Whit- by Public Library. Hazel worked as a nurse until 1978 when a diving accident left her as a quadre- plegic. As a talented artist she demonstrates excep- tional ability and I am sure if you take the time to view this exhibition, you will agree with me, this woman could compete with any of the great artists in the field. With reference to another aspect of talent, our chairman of programs and special even- ta, Mr. Daryl Taylor, competed recently in the Canadian Games for the Physically Disabled and carne out a two gold medal winner. Congratulations Daryl - we are very proud of your achievements. Another resident of the Town of Whitby Miss Ann Ottenbrite competed in the Canada Games in August at Thunder Bay, Ontario and broke three Canada Games records with three gold medal honors on every entry. Our Regional Councllor, Tom Edwards was on hand to offer instant congratulations from the Town of Whitby and express the pride we felt in her achievements. I would also like to mention an upcoming project for the disabled which will be held October 3, 1981 at Durham College which is the wheelchair clinic sponsored by the Durham Region Unit of the On- tario March of Dimes. This event will enable the disabled to have their wheelchair examined and through transfer to available wheelchairs, they will be able to enjoy entertainment - films - tour of the Coilege programs and refreshments - ail free! This type of event requires approximately 100 volunteers and I will make sure your mayor is there to represent the Town of Whitby and hope to see many of our disabled friends - remember the date - October3 from lOa.m. to4 p.m. The Tourist Information Centre will continue operation until Thanksgiving weekend with hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This centre has been more successful than we ever anticipated - throughout June, July and August we had over 7,800 visitors to the buldingz. Our registration book was signed by residenta.
