The lights around the table are dimmed. A glow emanates from the kit- chen. The light grows stronger as a huge birth- day cake cornes forth. Now, this may seem like a dunxb way to start a story about quartz- halogen headlamp systems. But, just think about 308,000 birthday candles. That is one heck of a lot of light. The sealed beam unit that cornes standard in rnost cars only produces about 42,000 candle- power. The difference would sure light up a lot. 0f birthday cakes!1 All right, let's forget the birthday cake and gifts and stuff, and start the story with how the lights got their name. The first part of the name cornes from the leaded quartz glass that the lens, as well as the bulb, are made of. Quar- tz is used because of its strength and the fact that it is more translu- cent than the glass used in conventional sealed beams which helps in giving a stronger, whiter light. The last haîf of the name cornes from the farnily of gases found inside the quartz bulb. The halogen gases in- clude such luminaries (oops!) as bromine, chiorine, flourmne and' iodine. (Many people want to know the dif- ference between quartz- halogen and the quartz iodine lights. There is none; iodine is just one of the halogen gases.) The purpose of this gas is an important one. In ordinary sealed beams, burnt particles of the tungsten* filament float through the vacuum and deposit themselves on the glass lens and reflector. Eventually the light from the unit weakens and yellows. With quartz-halogen, the gas forces the burnt particles back onto the filament in the bulb, providing a bright blue- white light at peak in- tensity for an extended time period. To help punch out all of that intense-blue- white light, you neecl a good reflector. Metal is best (as opposed to metal coated glass) because it can be better formed into a, true para- bolic shape. The lens is just as im- portant as the other par- ts of the light. We have already learned that the light passes through the leaded quartz glass bet- ter than through the glass of ordinary sealed beams. But that's flot ail. The fluting (the design cut into the lens) is 0f paramount import- ance also. It directs the light left, right, up or down. It creates the broad low beam of the fog lamp, and the long narrow beam of the of f- road auxiliary driving lights. Installation of the quartz-halogen con- version units is, quite literally, a snap. Auxiliary lights, by nature, are a little more complicated to install. Almost al auxiliaries, however, can be bought as a com- plete kit that includes wiring, relays, brackets and switches. So now that we under- stand a littie more about how they are put together and what makes them tick, let's talk about how useful quartz-halogen lights are. The useful distance of a sealed beaM unit is about 150 feet on low beam and about 400 feet on high. beam.
