Bob's first year Mayor Bob Attersley has been in office for almost a year. What kind of a year has it been and what does the following year hold? With due respect to the mayor I wonder, "what makes 'Bobby' run" or should we say, "ticket?" Dynamic, full of energy and get up and go I think he aims high and works to this end. He has been known about in the local environs for many years as a member of the Whitby Dunlop Hockey Team of the 1950's. The team represented Canada in 1958 in Russia. A fantastic and powerful team from an amateur status they gained fame everywhere. I think he was the one to score the winning goal in the game with Russia after the team had won so many games with other participating countries. This has given him a sense of country, a sense of pride in his own native land which he still feels. He felt this on Armistice Day as he stood at the Ceno- taph. He overheard a young woman explaining to her small children what the day meant and why they were there and hopefully they will not forget. The key to the mayor's success in life no doubt begins with common sense and a good sense of balance. A private enterpriser and a business man who has succeeded, he no doubt brings his philosophy to the mayor's chair as the town is a business in the finest sense of the word. The business word we could refer to as a "club" and we could include the town, an organize'd group of people with goals in mind and an interchange of ideas and thoughts. A mayor, of course, is not the authoritive figure the head of a business is, because he works in con- junction with members of council. In this case Mayor Attersley has great respect for his group and this smooths the path very much for good governing of the town. A very important task, the mayor tells me, is to have the Town of Whitby known in the business world, the world of comm-rerce and instury. This pertains to the world at large not just locally. Need- less to say there a! i many other aspects to "selling" Whitby as a pi,ce to live, work and play. We all realize that there must be a good sense of balance to run a town well. To avoid high resi- dential taxes it is necessary to have a broad tax base and this is done by the inclusion of commercial and more effectively, industry. To attract we must have something to offer. Our town from a business standpoint has much and to name a few; proximity to the lake, to Highway 401, to Highway 2 and the railways, of which we have two. To say they are necessary is putting it mildly, they are pluses and terribly important. Cargo on boats both coming and going, freight by railroad and trucking are one of the main reasons for certain locations to be chosen. I can remember many years ago when New York, Chicago and London were great financial centres but we never envisioned such things for Toronto. We had men of vision then who talked of a large subway system for Toronto but no one would listen, their vision was limited. Cities such as Toronto have established an iden- tity across North America and beyond which could not hae been achieved without the efforts and pro- gressive attitudes of those in business and govern- ment. Whitby can and is estbalishing its own identity as the "Town of Whitby" as is evidenced by the development of industry and commerce which is taking place. As a place to live or run a business our neighbour helps to give us stature. We can remain a town, something very precious today and still have a great deal to offer. As the mayor says, why be negative about any- thing? If you are so inclined find alternatives and you may find a solution. Optimism is the name of the game for our mayor, an eternal optimist. For the past few years we are being directed into an era of negative thinking by all the doom and gloom to which we are being subjected. There is a well known saying, "good news is no news" which means we do not hear of the good things which are going on which if thought about can turn us around to thinking positively We are fortunate to have a mayor and council and also some business men in town who turn aside negative thinking and by positive thinking ar progressive and are creating an identity for the Town of Whitby which is being recognized on a broadening scale.
