GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC - Durham West) Ontario Minister of Revenue Censorship board A recent Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations' publication should be of interest to a number of people in the Durham area and forms the basis of this week's Report from Queen's Park. The booklet, "Film Classification and Censor- ship - Some Questions Answered," highlights the reorganization of the Ontario Board of Censors and the revised film classification system which is now in place. The Ontario Board of Censors was recently re- structured and includes a present complement of one director, one assistant director and 25 part-time censors. The 25 part-time members of the board represent a cross-section of the community in age, philosophy, background, lifestyle and ethnie origin. One 0f the priorities of the board is to conduet open meetings with university and high sehool students, community associations and special in- terest groups to discuss values and concerns relating to censor board guidelines for screening films. In addition, information on aIl decisions of the On- tario Board of Censors is available to the public upon request. The censor board is responsible for providing a variety of services'and the "screening and defining of ail films (including ail 35mm, l6mm, 8mmn and videotape) intended for public exhibition" is only one of these services. Films are classified and censored to refleet the level of tolerance which has been indicated by the community standards of the Ontario public and in- corporates the following classification system: 1) Family: Films suitable for ail viewers. 2) Parental Guidance: Parents are advised that theme or content may be more mature than "family" films. However, children are permitted unsupervised access and the decision of suitability rests entirely with the parents. 3) Aduit Accompaniment: Restricted to 14 and over unless accompanied by an aduit. Theme or content may be more mature and, in the opinion of the board, not suitable for most children 13 and un- der. 4) Restricted:- Admittance limited to those .18 years and over. In exercising its jurisdiction, the Ontario Board of Censors recognizes the necessity to be representa- tive of the community in its makeup, reflective of the cornmunitv in its recommendations and openly accountable to the community in its decision making - qualities which are a credit both to the Ministry of Consumer'and Commercial Relations ahd the board itself.
