PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1981, WHITBY FREE PRESS Says planners are right.... Kolodzie teils 0MB he objeets to Brooklin projet Two Oshawa politi- cians have notified the Ontario Municipal Board that they object to.the planned develop- ment of Brooklin. Regional Councillor Ed Kolodzie and Oshawa Public Utilities Commissioner Gord Burnett haeve sent a let- ter to the chairman of the 0MB stating they "formally" object to the plans and "would wel- come an opportunity" to present their case. Earlier this year, Durham Regional Council gave its appro- val to a plan by First City Development Com- pany Limited to turn Brooklin into a town of 10,500 people from a village with a popula- tion of 1,600. First City plans to build more than 2,000 homes In the area over a ten year period as well as paying $8 million to extend trunk water sup- ply and sanitary sewer lines to the hamlet. Both Kolodzie and Burnett said that they base their objections on reports from the plan- ning staff of both the Region of Durham and the Town of Whitby. Local and regional planners objected to the project on the grounds that it was premature and would detract from already slated growth areas. The regional solicitor has also questioned the legality of development agreement that the region and the develop- er have signed. However, the region's finance staff have said that the project could be a $6.8 million boost to Durham. Durham Regional Chairman Gary Mayor Bob Attersley have expressed their anger at Kolodzie's ac- tion and say they will defend the project before the 0MB. A decision should be mnade before the end of the year as to whether or not a hearing on the plans will be held. John Crosbie, the finance minister in the short-lived 1979 Pro- gressive Conservative government of Joe Clark, will be the guest speaker of the Novem- ber 30 annual meeting of authority to overturn the decisions made at the local and regional levels. However, it is Up to the Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to refer the matter to t.he board.
