WHITBY FREE PRÉSS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1981, PAGE 25 Cenotaph will stay where it is, town fathers promise Whitby Town Council has decreed that the cenotaph will remain in its present location "forever." Last week, councillors unanimously rejected the suggestion of one of their colleagues that the monument be moved from its park at Dundas and Green Streets to Centennial Park on Brock Street South. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Bran- ch 112 went to last week's council meeting to request the cenotaph remain where it is. Branch president Robert Adams told council "There is some strong feelings about this among members." Regional Councillor Tom Edwards, himself à veteran and Legion member, said he would "vehemently" oppose moving the miemorial. "We will not take our cenotaph to one little corner of the town where it will be open to vandalism," Edwards told council. "I appreciate there is some thought of moving the cenotaph. Although it's well meant, I oppose it," he continued. People have been going to the cenotaph ever since it was erec- ted in 1923 and that alone should be reason not to move it, Edwards said. It should stay where it is "for the sake of three remaining World War One veterans who live in Whitby," he concluded. The suggestion to move the cenotaph originally came -from West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli who said that the tiny park is being surrounded by buildings. Bugelli said that it should be moved to Cen- tennial Park becaUse not only is it a good loca- tion but it is not a playing park. He added that it had more room to accommo- date the, crowds that urually 'gather for memorial services on November 11. "The real meaning of the memorial is being obliterated," the coun- cillor maintained. "What in 1923 was a very prominent location is now not so good." Bugelli was of the opinion that it "deser- ves a place of best visi- bility offering the best space." It's not work to walk. So why not walk to work? Cover contest winners The Whitby Jaycees in conjunction with the public libraries of Whitby, Ajax and Pickering as well as the Ajax-Pickering Social Planning Council will publish a community information directory later this year. Seen here are Margaret McFayden, chief libararian of the Whitby Public Library; Karen Spence, third place winner; Dave Loft, president of the Whitby Jaycees; Stephen Wood, second place winner; and, Jim Bradfield of the library's community information service management committee.
