PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1981, WHITBY FREE PRESS Ontario Riding residents reject right to strike for all federal government workers OTTAWA - Residents of Ontario Riding believe that the right to strike should he taken away from federal govern- ment employees accord- ing to a survey done by MP Scott Fennell. This conclusion was reached by responses given by 700 households throughout the riding which is comprised of the Towns of Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and the Township of Uxbridge. According to Fen- nell's office, this repre- sents a two per cent response rate and is typical of Toronto and district federal ridings. Fennell's constituents were asked four questions. Asked whether or not inside postal workers should be denied the right to strike 87.6 per cent of the respondants said yes while 10.8 per cent said no and 1.2 per cent had no comment to make. Fennell then asked whether the right to strike should be denied to all federal employ- ees. About 81.2 per cent of the respondants said yes while 15'1 per cent said no and 2.9 per cent had no comment. However, Ontario Riding residents do not believe that paid mater- nity leave benefits should be required by law. Only 18.6 per cent favored such a require- ment while three per cent had no comment and 78.4 per cent op- posed it. The Progressive Con- servative MP also asked if the federal govern- ment should be allowed to de-index personal in- corne tax from the rate of inflation in an effort to raise more revenue. A majority of 76.2 per cent said no while 10.8 per cent said yes and 13 per cent had no com- ment. Fennell said that the large percentage of no comment responses could be attributed to a poorly worded question. The MP said he has sent his survey results to Jean-Claude Parrot, the president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers; Finan- ce Minister Allan Mac- Eachen; Treasury Board president Don Johnston; Canada Post Corporation president. Michael Warren and to the minister responsible for Canada Post, An- drew Ouellet. "I don't expect these gentlemen will pay more attention than usual to these opinions, but, at least, my riding is on the record," Fen- nell said. "I hope they will think of these results as a friendly warning," he added. The survey results, Fennell said, will be useful to him when lob- bying fellow Tory caucus members. . . .. . ...... mmwmmm ewim gives grant to build Port Whitby sewer lne The Region of Dur- ham is to receive a grant of $441,760 to help pay the construction costs of the Pringle Creek/Corbett Creek Diversion Sewer. According to Regional Councillor Gerry Emm, this grant is on top of the 15 per cent grant it usually received from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for such projects. This means that the region could receive some $750,000 towards the estimated $2.65 million cost of the pro- ject. However, there are some snags. According to Emm, who .is chairman of regional council's public works committee, the contract for the project must be awarded before March 31, 1982 if they are to receive the grant. During the 1981 bud- get discussions, region- al council deferred the Port Whitby project on the grounds that it was too expensive. The grant is being given under the Great Lakes Basin Water Quality Agreement that the provincial and federal governments entered into earlier this year. Emm said that the grant will give Whitby politicians more ammu- nition to fight for the project. However, he said he did not know whether or not the region will go ahead with it. "I feel it will fit in with our budget time- table," he said adding that he would like to see early approval so that the grant can be ob- tained.
