Two wild storma over the lake, huge breakers 10 or 12 feet high, white surf bashing against the shore, magnificent to watch and the sound is majestic but it can be very destructive. There is great power in that mass of water and'al one can, do is hope it stays contained within its boundaries. During a lifètime one can experience many kinds of weather both good and bad. Sometimes it can be funny, other times tragic. Once in the centrai part of Florida we had to stop for a time until a dust storm blew itself out. Another person who had stopped rushed over to us and said with great excitement "look, look buffalos are stampeding through the orange groves." We saw a few cows who had somehow left their pasture and were running along under the citrus trees. How- ever, this woman was convinced and would have a good story to tell when she returned home. Many memories return today of weather as I look out the window and enjoy the beautiful day we are having. Pure, white glis tening snow and the lake a sea of diamonds. Huge mounds of ice on shore- created and built up every time the waves splash. At sunset iast' night everything ,had a rosy glow, even the lake looked like a pond of rose water. Water has great power and often "rules the waves, " leaving terrible destruction and despair in. its wake. One has to wonder why many people, remain -in these areas when they realize it will always happen again. I have seen those areas in a western state where very costly homes tumble down the hilîside to total' destruction and sometimes ioss of life. Does hope beat eternai in the human brest? In these same areas signas warning you not to smoke and flot to iight a match. I have been told that house insurance is almost impossible to get. In these tropical or semi-tropical areas the plants and trees have an oil base so when a fire starta it goes with great rapidity. In our climate this is not so and our vegetation has a water base. I have neyer given much thought to snow and ice in the United Kingdom aithough 1 have realized they do on occasion have winter storms similar to ours but of shorter duration. Their winters are often coid and damp, chiilblains attest to ths. Due too to roasting your front while your back freezes. I do remember seeing snow coming through a badly fit- ted window frame once, when my daughter was having. a bath. It soon dlsappeared and the ground was clear inthe mornlng. My husband tells me when It snows in England it reaily snows, no haif way'measures there. Thé snowfalls, therefore, are substantial but due to the temperate climate the snow does.flot last for long periods of time. Snow has been known to fait in par- ts of Cornwall asilate as the month of May but this is exceptionai and only happens on occasion. We were in Spain aboutl8 years ago and they had, their first real snowfail in 200 years. The resuit Was total' chaos in Ibiza as we tried to get.off the isla'nd after a short visit to get back to thé- mainiand for Christmas. To escape by boat was impossible, they were not operating, planes could flot land and when one tried it almost went into the sea. After 24 hours one plane did land and they had to bring one poor soul off týe plane to an ambulance as he neariy died of fright and had a heart attack. The stree ts were empty, no one ventured out and in truth we were in a ghost city. Finally with much ado a bus was found but there were brake problems and to navigate over that icy road to' the airport was a terrifying experience. Wimade it only to spend the day in an unheated airport without food other than candy bars ànd that sort of fare but plenty to drink. We had met- three pilots from Alaska a few days before and spent some happy hours with them. Only because of them my daughters made it into the Plane when it finally arrived. 1 too was scared but was assured with. this three on board we somehow wouid make it; such innocence can be bliss. We did make it land ail of us had Christmas dinner on land in a lovely hotel, 1 think in Vaiencia. Seven courses and a bottle of champagne on the house for the Canadians and the total cost which I must check out in my ciary was something like $1.50 or $2 per person. Those days are long gone! Later on, probably January, we left our apar- tment to drive south and cross over to Africa. Weather again, ramn by the bucket for days on end with no let up. We drove through water on the high- way up to our running board and as always a million times over I thanked God for my Volkswagon. That is a story in itself. Ciothes inciuding bed linen and tabiecloths were hung on lines stretched across flat roof tops. During 'this speil there seemed to be'no drying 1 As you sat down at a dining room table the tablecioth smacked at you wet and cold. The bedding was worse, damp and chiiiy. My daughter and hier college girl friend maintained that by sleeping on the sheets a steam was created which in time kept themf warm., My other daughter and I siept on heavy coats which we thankfuliy had with us. No ilI effects, no coids but we did have flu.., More 'weather'as we:moved up, to Austria,-aý beautiful place to 'be and our apart ment there in Igies just outside «f.Innsbruck was cosy and warm., Their worst winter in many, many years with feet of- dry white snow which they ail loved because they al seem to ski from tiny tots to oldsters, some of a very advanced age. What a glorious country Austria is and parts of it are hurtingly beautiful, the kind of beauty that aimost overwhelms you. The Austrians dress for the weather and then businessmen, bankers, doc- tors and it seemed everyone wore marvelous ski clothes to the office and skiied after lunch. What a way to go, total enjoyment of their environmnent. ' As I look out the window now I wonder why.we are not sitting on chairs in the garden drinking hot glue- wine as we did in Austria. I promised myseif a lot of things while we were there but somne of them have dissipated into thin air. ]Resiet Save ophn Now you can cut the cost of phone oeils. to Toronto with Bell Canada's Optional Caling Plan.
