If the latter is a true assumption, tben the 69,000 square feet given to the other areas of town is not part of tbe 1.7 million. Evans also said tbat tbere is a -possibility that the Rossland Road Garden Street area will "not develop to 800,000 within the Durham offi- cial plan" and that it could be amended to 642,000 square feet. This would allow the Dundas/Tbickson area to bave its proposed 55U,000 square feet.' The special study also' suggests tbat the lands owned by Jovial Invest- ments Limited and its partners could be rezoned as higb density residential. The land, located on Dundas Street East just behind Bowman Avenue, was supposed to be the site of a Cana- dian Tire retail outlet and other special pur- pose commercial stores. .However, last year Wbitby Town Council ~il, chuck short 1/1 8 cut from grade 'A' cut (rani Canwaa9rad 'A' beef d0eroast..... $4 M 1 .1h Th Cool Wendcr favoriSe stewing beef .... 3 ?1$1 3I cut (rom Canada grade 'A' beef Mlae steaks.... $ .ti U lgý PeekW biseut diger nr~nice. s.h rwakr 0pkg. 7 pk. of100 sand bagsI..bags...... 1.29 dtdkitchen catcher garbage bags ...........99 Totino's pza criy crust I0" frozen 30 pkg. 1 8 Robin1 Hoodur 500 g CoW pBrand baking soda ........... 49 Red Rose tea bags ...1.89 4 -' '«"* 2f. oz. fin Velor Hunts bathroom tissue......1.35 tomato sauce ...........89 60 m rail plastic Handiwrap food wrap.. 1 .45 12 L box powdered 79 350 aiL.cont. liquid cream Jergens soap .........1099 21 g Cong. ai idjheTb ............ 1.29 F450 bax lb edim IscMuits ........... 89 32 fIL oz. bdr. refrldgraced FB oanejuice ......99 400.aiogp&g. cociem ies ......14 5.5 (L. az. (A hearing is scbe- duled for April 19.) .> Evans points out that this recommendation would require an amendment to botb the town's and the region's officiai plan.. However, be does not believe that this sugges- tion should have been brought forward now because of the sche- duled hearing. "I don't think it was kosher to recommend the high density resi- dential to council,"' he said. Nights tii 9 pm III tbink it is a morè acceptable form of development than a Canadlian Tire dèvelop- ment."p In bis report, planning director Bob Short said be doesn't think this wil be acceptable to Jovial. The suggestion "ldoes flot reflect the residen- tial-commercial land use split indicated in council's resolution," Short said, "and is unlikely to satisfy the intentions of the land- oewners, given their recent appeal lodged, with the Ontario Muni- cipal Board. " Evans also said that the plan could also have an effect on the down- town's development. He points out that there is a lack of vacant land in the downtown and any new develop- ment would probably require the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new ones. "This will resuit in a smaller net gain tha <t otherwise could be ex- pected, " he said. This matter is a weighty one ad is ex- pected to take much of council's time in the months to corne. School to open early The Durhamn Board of Education has decided to make this year's summer vacation five days shorter. At its meeting last week, the board decided to re-open school on Sep- tember 1 as opposed to the traditional Septem- ber 7, that being the day after Labor Day. However, to compen- sate for the sborter vacation, students will. have a longer Christmas. break. Students will be let out of class on December 17, instead of December 21. These decisions will not be implemented un- til input bas been re- ceived from parents, teacbers and other board employees as well as from the Durham Region Roman Catholic
