Bus serv ice will be extended into eveninegs and- Saturdays Evening and Saturday service by the Whitby Transit Service will be introduced later this year. Last week, Whitby Town Council approved a $367,800 budget for the transit service.-* This budget also pro- vides for a special school bus run at a cost of $14,000, a $3,5W0 ad- vertisi'ng campaign and provisions for the in- creased cost of fuel. The transit -should begin offering service until il p.m. on ,Thurs- days and Frid'ays and on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. by April 15. The gross cost of pro- viding this extra service hias been estimated at $41,000. However, pro- vincial government sub- sidies and farebox revenues are projected to bring the net cost to the taxpayer down to $18,0w0. East Ward Councillor Two face theft charges Two .men have been charged by thé Durham Regional Police Force with the theft of stage, lights and other equip- ment fromn the Henry Street 11gh Sehool. A spokesmnan for the force said that on December 10, 1981, 12 stage lights and two microphones and cords were stolen from the sehool. Aifra Gale, 17, of 100 White Oaks Court, Apt. *57has been charged with two counts. of theft over $200. 1Kelvin Mark, 17, of 914 Greenwood Cres. bas been charged with' one count of theft over $200. Both men will appear in Whitby Provincial Court on February 12. The police spokesman said that the stolen equipmfent was recovered. - Joe Drumm and Region- al Councillor Gerry Emm opposed extend- ing the service. Drumm said that the buses are still experi- mental and that he only supported the system for its three year try- out. "I don't see the need" for extending the ser- vice, he added. However, West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli took an opposing view. "If we don't do it now we will, have no basis' to strike a 'budget for transit next year," he, said pointing out that the service contract with Charterways Limited will expire in June, 1983. Mayor. Bob Attersley also supported the ex- tended service saying that it was an overaîl benefit to the town.* Treasurer AI Claring- bold informed council that extending the ser- vice reduced the "per hour" fee charged by Charterways to operate the service. Therefore, itwill be cheaper to run the service on a per liur basis. It is also interestingto note that the 1981 budget provided for $41,000 in farebox revenues. How- ever, $50,281 was realized. In 1982, the. town ex- pects to raise $63,000 toward. the transit ser- vice' s operation from the farebox. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications is ex- pected to give the ser- vice a $91,150 grant. This means that. the overaîl net cost to the taxpayer will be $212,850 for 1982. The net cost to the taxpayer in 1981 was $165,004. The town will spend $10,000 on the purchase and erection of bus shel- ters, however, itýwill not contemplatethe con- struction of a bus ter- minal this year. At that committee meeting two weeks ago, Newcastle politicians voted not to support the two amendments to the Durham Region official plan that will allow the hamlet to grow into a town of 10,500 people over a ten year period." First City Develop- ment Company Limited received Durham Regional Counil's blessing for the project last year. The develop- er has also agreed to pay the cost of extend- ing, trunk water-supply and sanitary sewer pipes to the hamlet, esti- mated at $8 million. However, two Oshawa politicians have already filed an objection to the plan before the Ontario Municipal Board. It is not known whether or not a hearing will be held on the matter.
