For novice players.... WGRM--LA introduces stx-bal By TOM FRANK Registration for the 1982 lacrosse season in Whitby wiil be held on Saturday, February 27 and again on March 13. Boys or girls between the ages of 5 and 18 can register at either the Iroquois Park Arena or in the Whitby Mail after 10 a.m. and be fore 2 p.m. The fees are un- changed from last'year at $15 per player to a maximum of $25 per famlly., The Whitby-Garrard. Road Minor Lacrosse Association wiil have at least one representative team in each division from tyke, novice, peewee, bantam through midget, plus a junior "B" team. If you need more in- formation, you may phone the publicity director, Tom Frank, at 668-427 in the evenings. Any minor lacrosse team that intends to play in'the national playoffs this year may have a tougher time with their finances. Wintario grants will have to be earned in a tournam'ent to be held in the early season. The top three teams in each category will qualify for up to haîf of their travel expenses. The fourth place teams will qualify for up to $100 per player for travel. At this timie, the peewee nationals are scheduled for B.C. and the bantam nation- aIs will be near Mon- treal. WGRMLA is current- ly running a program for introducing STX- BALL to younger kids who have neyer seen la- crosse before. STX- BALL is a new form of Canada's national sport that, is becomning popu- lar in some school systerns.> Lt is played with a soft bail and collapsible sticks. I will have a more complete-descrip- tion of STX-BALL in the next few weeks. No other equipment is needed. The primary objective of the associa- tion is, to increase the awareness of the game of lacrosse. They are targetting this year at boys of Cubs a nd Beaver ages at the invitation of the leaders. They offer a haîf-hour explanation of STX7- BALL and how it's played, including a short movie. This is followed by ýat least a haîf hour of actual ex- perience with the equip- ment and catching the bail. If your group is-inter- ested in a demonstra- tion, cail Tom Frank at 668-4270 té arrange a suitable time. Demon- strations will be provid- ed on a first-come first- served basis. By ANN GOULDING With ten-year-old Janice Currie leading the way with four first place finishes, the Whit- by Iroquois Swim Club captured another vic- tory at Iroquois Pool on Sunday competing with teams from Scar- borough, Ajax and Port Hope.* Final resuits found the W.I.S.C. team ahead by a score of .489; Scar- borough Spartans' took second with, 461, Ajax Aquatic Club third with W3, and Port Hope were fourth with'141. Particularly strongin boys' ten and under events was W.I.S.C.'s Brent Walsh collecting seconds in five events, and Jodi MacPhail in 10 and under girls' with two firsts and a fourth. Competing 'in. 11/12 girls' category Heather Ainsley gave good per- formanc es to take two firsts and two fourths, and Kevin' Walker scored high with two fir- sts and two seconds along with Chris Don- nelly who grabbed two firsts, a second, and a third. In senior boys' events Dave Goulding set a club record in the 100 meter freestyle, being the first W.I.S.C. swimmer to break the minute in the young club's short history. Goulding collected three firsts and a second place in his events. DO'C -beats.
