PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY MARCH 17, 1982, WHITBY FREE PRESS PULL-OUT SECTION Buying Roofing? Look for Quality, Quality and Quality Perhaps the oldest adage in real estate advises that the three most im- portant considerations in selecting property are lo- cation, location and loca- tion. Roofing experts at the CertainTeed Home Insti- tute offer homeowners a like piece of advice: "When- buying a roof, look for quality, quality and quality-quality ma- terials made by a quality manufacturer and in- stalled by a quality con- tractor." Quality materials refer to top-of-the-line asphalt roofing shingles, which of- fer a wide range of advan- tages that simply are not available with standard roofing. Hallmark and Inde- pendence shingles, for ex- ample, which are two popular 'choices of home- owners, carry a 25-year limited warranty, 10 years longer than the warranty that comes with standard shingles. Those extra years -of life actually make the better quality shingles an economical choice. Equally important, top- of-the-line shingles are available in exciting styles, textures and colors, so they can add pizzaz to even a very ordinary house. Random overlays are a special feature of Inde- pendence shingles, while Hallmark comes with a textured, woodgrained surface that simulates the appearance of less-durable wood shingles. Both are available in attractive, earth tone colors. One of the signs of a quality product is to see who makes it. Just as cer- tain companies have fine names in the furniture or automobile business, so too have others established a reputation for roofing products. Don't be afraid ROOFING CAN BE EXCITING as these top-of-the-line Independence shingles prove. The random overlay pattern and rich, woodtone colors combine to give the look of Iess-durable wood roofing. Independence comes with a 25-year limited warranty.t to ask your building ma- terials supplier or con- tractor who these com- panies are. In any event, select a manufacturer who has a reputation for mak- ing a quality product. Reputation is impor- tant, too, in selecting a roofing contractor. The best shingles made by the best manufacturer will look even better when in- stalled 'by a true profes- sional. Polish'your wood furni- ture with lemon oil regu- larly, to keep it from drying out. To thoroughly clean it, use a good fur- niture cleaner, not water. Window Cover-Up If window molding is cracked or chipped, dis- guise the fact with attrac- tive wall covering that co- ordinates with curtains, blinds or shades. "CANADAS No.1 ChimneyFire Guards If you are like many wood-burning appliance owners, you probably don't give much thought to your chimney. Yet, chimneys can become a serious fire and health hazard to millions of American households unless certain gafety pre- cautions are taken. The main problem is the for- mation of creosote. Creosote is a tarry or flaky substance that is the result of incomplete com- bstion of wood, caused by a lack of sùfficient oxygen. It's highly flam- mable and can cause chim- ney tires if not removed regularly. Although many chim- ney fires are relatively harmless and can occur without ever being no- ticed, some can cause a great deal of chimiey damage and can burn a- house down. Regular chimney cleaning and maintenance checks are therefore a safety must -at least once a year for fireplaces, once a month for airtight stoves. Unless you are well informed on chimney cleaning and inspecting, the Fireplace Institute re- commends you hire a pro- fessional chimney mainte- nance crew. Check the yel- low páges in your phone directory or ask a reput- able woodburning appli- ance dealer for referrals. But, should a chimney fire occur, you can put it out with a ninimal amount of trouble by re- membering it takes movement of air to keep it going. STOVE' The Today Magazine, circulated by your area's largest distribution newspaper, has been quoted as saying that the Heritage Wood Stove is Canada's BEST as indicated by the re- suits of tests conducted by the Federal Govern- ments Combustion Research Lab. • *SJE DRAFT* HfII D - S.F. % iI-M% I AVAILABIE AI*: The FirpaoePlus 900 Hopkins Street at Burns Whitby - 668-3192 Tues. - Wed. 9-6 Thurs., Frl. 9-9 Sat. 9-5 Closed Monday If you have an airtight stove, first put out the stove fire with a dry chemi- cal, like baking soda or a recommended fire extin- guisher. Avoid using water, as the resulting steam can burn your hands. Close all the air controls and the door. If, after a few minutes, the fire is still going, or if the chimney is not cool enough to touch in an hour, call your local fire department. If the tire does -go out, don't open the door or damper for at least thirty minutes, or the fire will start up again. Fireplace owners should first-put out the fire in the chaiber with a recom- mended dry chemical. If using an extinguisher, try- shooting it up the chim- ney. Close the glass doors and/or put a wet blanket over the screen and block off the fireplace opening. If, after a few minutes, the chimney fire is still going, call the fire department. After a fire, have your chimney checked for damage. Proper chimney instal- lation -is a very important prerequisite in wood- burning safety. If you're planning to install a chim- ney yourself, completely read the manufacturer's instruction before yon begin and follow them to the letter.t Carpeting Can Create "New" Home Don't buy a new home -create a new look for. your present home with carpeting. Start with the ropm where you spend the most time. A fresh coat of paint, color-coordinated with a carpet in a fresh new shade and style can bright- en the mood and liven up the entire home. Many homes center around a- spacious L-shaped living and dining area. It's efficient and roomy, but you may have become tired of the dec- orating scheme. You can achieve a new look with carpet. Carpet the dining area in a light, inviting hue. ..Then, choose the same style and texture of carpet in a deeper shade of the same color for the living room. An expert installer can make the dividing seam an asset, and you'll have the look of two distinct living areas and the convenience of one large room. -de-M. ..........
