T 'WHIWBh FREE PRESS PULL-OUT SECTION, WEDNESDAY MARCH 17 The hetpumphs corne of age 1982, PAGE'5 By JOHIN ANDF-LA With a typical ,Fesi- dence conswning 70 per cent of their total energy for space heat- ing, and after a long walt in the wings, along with a major technologi- cal advanee, the heat pump bas suddenly become of age. The ýreason for this popularlty lu simple, the heat pump delivers more thermal energy thi1 .,it actuallv con- sumes. For example, on a 40 degree Fahrenheit day, for. every dollar's worth of energy it con- sumes you would receive in return $2.63. On the other hand, space beating bas what is ealled a i toi lratio, or for every dollar it con- sumes, you will receive approximately one dollar ini return. You probably have a heat pump in your kit- chen already, and it's located in your refriger- ator. If you feel the heat coming from the rear, or underneath or even the sides of some refri- gerators, that's fairly warm. Have you ever wondered where that heat comes from? Well the majority comes, from the interior of the refrigerator and/or freezer. Now let's focus our attention on a heat pump for space heating. It's split into two sec- tions, an outdoor unit and an indoor unit, which becomes part of your forced air heating system., The outdoor and in- door units are inter- connected with' copper *refrigerant limes whlch contains a fluid called freon 22. During the heating season the Freon la circulated by a compre ssor first to the indoor section then on to the outdoor unit where its température could be as low as minus 25 degrees Fabrenheit. Since heat flows from a warme r to a, colder'con-- dition, and the air flow-, mng over the pipes being, warmer than minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit it automatically absorbs this heat. From there the Freon gas continues through the compressor which compresses the gas and presto, we now could have gas tempera- ture in access of 125 degrees Fahrenheit, it then continues on to the indoor unit where tbis heat is now distributed throughout the existing duet work. For summer air con- dltionlng this procesais reversed. On most oc- casions auxiliary heat la requlred wlthin the resi- dence to top of the heat requiremehts. The exact amnount required la determlned by the size and efficien- cy of the heat pump and by local lilmatic condi- tions. If your plans el for air conditioning or a way of reducing' your, heating bills, I highly recommend a heat up- recommend a heat pump either for your existing home or new home. EDITOR'S NOTE: Mr. Andela la wlth the ffrm of Rayco Peterborough, Limlted whlch speclal- Izes ln heat pumps, air condltioning and refri- geration. THIS WATER-SAVING BATHROOM could save Up to 36,000 gallons of water a year-plus many dollars in energy savings-for an average family of four, says Kohler Co., a leading manufacturer of Water-Guard water- saving plumbing products. Water-saving showerheads, for example, offer drenching showers with a flow of just 3 gallons per minute, 50 percent less water than a conventional showerhead. That means less energy is required to heat water for showering.;Water-saving toilets offer positive, thorough flushing action with significantly less water than most conventional toilets. And, water-saving faucets reduce flo0w to a rate that is ample without being wasteful. More good news: Water-Guard products cost no more than most conventional water-wasting products. For more information, write: Kohier Co., Box WG, Kohler, Wl 53044. t Reducing Hot Water Costs: Switch to showers. . brief showers at that. It's wise to instail a low- flow showcr hcad that al- lows only around 4 gallons a minute to, corne through rather than the 6 to 10 gallons a minute you get through many ordinary shower heads. Cutting Down on Your Energy Bis Insulate hot-water pipes where possible so. that the heated water'in-themwon't be wasted. Kecp your water heater set at around 1400-adequate for most households. For each 1001 you increase the temp- erature over 1400, your hot water costs go up by 3 percent. Reducing Electricu'y Bills: The vast majority -of the electrical appliances in the home require relatively' little electricity or are operated so infrequently and/or for such a short per- iod of time that whether you use them or flot won't affect your electric bill to any great extent.
