He or'she plans it, designs it, creates it and maintains it. To some, a successful land- scape is something that looks smooth and lush. To others, it's a combination of bold textures and mate- riais. Texture is an important feature in creating a pleas- ing landscape, points out "All About Landscap- ing," a guide book 'f rom, Orthom. Fine textures accentuate the mass and shape of the ground form while. coarse textures attract the eye to the I surface itself. The book recommends that landscapers use coarse or fine textures and strong color materials "sparingly and dynamically." 'It also suggests that one way of planning a landscape is to think of outdoor space ini terms of interior space, wi*th floors, ceilings, and walis. The "floor" may con- sist*of lawns, carefully se- lected plants, gravel, con- crete, stones, tiles and bricks. Thie "ceiling" may be a caieful arrangement of trees, plastic and fibe- glass shelters,, and even such things as canvas, wood and reeds. Hedges, shrubs, vines,.screens, trel- lises and full or partial separations made of man- made materials such as wood, steel, iron and brick may go into the " walls." Once a landscaper has decided on a plan, the hard and often physical, work Ilies'ahead. "Ail About Landscaping" suggests 12 steps, starting with clear- ing the site to the bare soil, leaving only the plants and features that will be in- cluded in the finished landscape. This first step may require the use of an effi- cient chemidcal to strip the area of unwanted weeds a.nd grass, such as Ortho Kleenup, available in either a ready-to-use or concentrated form. Such herbicides destroy the entire plant,. roots and ail, but don't affect thé soil or later plantings. Directions should be followed care- fully., Next, the landscaper. should rough-grade the aiea, making any major changes in the contours that the plan may demand. This may involve heavy labor and the* landscaper may want to consider, hir- ing outside help or renting special equipment, such as a tractor. The rest of the 12 steps are as follows: e Instail a drain system. * Do masonry and wood construçtion. *Instail "headers,",the, wood or'masonry edges around lawns or planting beds. *Instali sprinkler sys- tem, if planned, and any other underground uines, such as gas or electrie con- duits. e Spread fertilizers and sol -additions, and culti- vate. *Level the area to the final grade. *Plant one-gallon and larger plants. e Plant bedding plants, ground covers and lawns. e Clean up. Get rid of any remaining littie piles of rock, lumber and so on. Hose down ail the wood and concrete surfaces-. e New plants will have to be cared for until their moots a re well established and they are part of the site, which may take about six weeks. Check the root- bails daily and water care- fully. t ENJOY EVERY DAY 0F THE YEAR, REGARDLESS 0F WEATHER in a ThermaSoi classic Capri octagon shape Whir1pool Spa in a simulated outdoor garden setting.
