Upon arrivai at Queen's Park, the Lieutenant Governor John Aird and his wife were welcomed by a Guard of Honor and an accompanying royal salute -from, the State Trumpeters of the Governor General's Horse Guards. Before entering the building, -a 15 gun salute was fired by the Saluting Battery, 7th Toronto Regi-' ment, Royal Canadian Artiiiery. After the members of the Legisiature took their seats in the House, the Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. Aird entered the Chamber, accompanied by thc 12-member Vice Regai party, the Chief Cierk of the Legislature, Roderick Lewis, and Premier Davis.1 The formality. invoived in the opening, of the Session is a tradition dating back neariy 200 yeairs when Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe opened the first Parliament of Upper Canada on September 17, 1792. Although the Parliament Buildings have endured changes and a variety of legisiators have corne and gone, it is in this building that Ontario's legislative heritage is enacted, preserved, and passed on. The Legisiature traditionaiiy opens at three o'ciock with the arrivai 0f the Lieutenant Governor, the entry into the Chamber of the Sergeant-at-Arms with the Mace; and the readilng of the Throne Speech.
