Wayne Conrad is the president of Environ- mental Electronics, a firm that manufactures and markets a device that emits negative ions into the air. Conrad designed the device after two years of research into the ef- fect of small air ions on people and bacteria. (An ion is an electrically charged molecule.) Accordýng to the young scientist, na ture produces negative ions which are "beneficial to your health both direct- ly and indirectly. " 'However, Conrad, a first year student at the University of Toronto, discovered that many man made devices - such as home or office heating and air candi- tioning units - produce positive ions. He maintains that these ions cause such things as high blood pressure, irritability and headaches. So, hie invented the Naturalair 2100,' a 25 centimetre high device that produces and emits negative 'ions. "Negative ions," he said, "'would inhibit bacterial growth and take smoke and dust out of the air." "ions stick to parti- dles in the air" making them too heavy to float and fail to the ground where they can be cleaned up. "The ions are the key to filtering," 'Conrad continues. "If the bac- terial growth is inhibit- ed, they're not going to harm you." Environmental Elec- tronics is located on Church Street in Brooklin and when in full operation this sum- mer will employ a staff of six students. These students will be employed both in the marketing and manu- facturing of the Natural- air. Conrad proudly points out that ah 0of his products are hand made *and assembled. The models, which *generally seil for $189.95, are also in the average person's price. range, hie said. "1It' what the aver- age person -needs," he said adding that. he was critical of his competi- tion which manufac- tures mass-produced plastic units at two to three tim es the price. Aside frorn being Whitby's youngest en- trepreneur, Conrad has an amazing record in it- studying neuro-sciences and electrical physics. Is ambition is to be a neuro-surgeon. In 1978, Conrad won the environmental design award at the ed his first invention when he was 16. He had found a way to cure the acid rain problem elec- trostatically. But he can not get a government grant to produce bis in- Moore - a leading authority on electro- statics.
