PAGE 16, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1982, WHITBY FREE-PRESS Report from Queen s Park By The Hon. George Ashe, MPP (PC - Durham West) Ontario Minister of Revenue A concern, expressed by several constituents, relates to scheduling problems experienced with GO Transit over the past winter. I have discussed this matter with my colleague, the Minister of Transportation and Communications, and he has provided the following explanation. Recent GO Train delays can be attributed to a wide range of causes - including snow clearance, SEMINARS STARTING FOR SURVIVAL & GROWTH For Small (1 - 100 Employee) Companies April 17, 1982 MAKE MORE MONEY May 8, 1982 - For sure o Get Rich Quick - For everyone Seminars held at Holiday Inn, Oshawa. s9500 each includes lunch. The Lakeshore East rail service, operated by CN Rail under contract to GO Transit, was one of the hardest hit. The maintenance of GO rail equipment, also serviced by CN, has been plagued by trouble over the past winter as well. Despite the unusually severe weather, the Minister acknowledges that service should have been much better than it was. As purchaser of the service which is operated n lines owned by the rail- way companies, GO Transit is not in a position to solve these problèms directly. Nevertheless, GO Transit-officials, aware of its obligation to deliver reliable transportation to the commuting public, has relayed its concerns to CN Rail. GO Transit officials are continuing to work with CN Rail to provide Ontarians with the highest possi- ble standard of service. The Minister of Trans- portation and Communications realized that these problems have inconvenienced many Durham resi- dents among othersi and he appreciates your patience and support. Extension of GO Service from Pickering to Oshawa: The Minister of Transportation and Communica- tions has recently received the report which was prepared by the planning and engineering staff of CN Rail and is in the process of reviewing this report. My colleague is preparing a cabinet submission, regarding the extension-of GO Rail service from Pickering to Oshawa, for discussion within the next couple of weeks. I have been assured that the Oshawa corridor project will be a major component of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' five year plan for the extension of GO Transit. Parking Facilities: Recently, the parking facilities at the Pickering GO Station were expanded and by the end of this summer, an additional 110 car parking lot will be constructed adjacent to the Whitby GO Station. GO Transit in the Region of Durham is only one component of the Ontario Government's "GO East" policy, but to the individuals using this service it is a very important component. The government, and I as a member of this government, are very aware of the importance of this transportation system to this region and its users. Daffodil sale Volunteers such as the two ladies seen here were found in locations all over Whitby last week as they sold daffodils for the local branch of the Canaidan Cancer Society. This is just one of many fund raising events to be held throughout the mon- th of April - which is cancer month across the nation - to help further the society's objectives. Mickey Flynn of Whitby (left) is seen buying a bunch of daffodils from Karen Moore and Judy Moreland last Saturday afternoon at the downtown Brewer's Retail outlet. The ladies estimated that they sold 125 bunches that day. - Free Press Staff Photo CLEMMN K & M CLEANERS SAME DAY SERVICER * I ALTERATIONS AND REPAIRS Dye Problems The phrase "dyed in the wool" des- cribes the old way of dipping yarns into hot vats until they reached the desired shade. Today, most of what you wear is dyed as pieces of fabric on huge ma- chines. Dyes /have changed, too. Scien- tists have had to de- velop special ones for synthetics, which do not accept dye well, and do not accept the dyes used on natural fabrics at all. Re- searchers are always trylng to make dyes more resistant to sun- light and air pollution. K & M Cleaners re- commends that you protect your bright colors by dry-clean- ing. Harsh deter- gents and the agita- tion of your washing machine wears out dyes - that "washed- out" look: Deeply- colored red and blue garments are likely to bleed, because it is necessary to put so much dye into the fa- bric. Other garments washed with them, especially polyesters, are liable to pick up this excess dye. Your drycleaner avoids this problem because he can sort loads much more closely than you can at home, because of his volume of work. 1 c4 eLaning Swi.e o IT nU- 9amg" 112 COLBORNE ST.
